Hyundai’s WRC Future Remains Uncertain, According to Thierry Neuville

Thierry Neuville has expressed that Hyundai has not yet made a definitive decision regarding its future in the World Rally Championship (WRC), addressing recent rumors about a potential exit after the 2025 season as “unfounded.”

The Belgian driver, who represents both Hyundai and the WRC, was responding to a report circulating in Belgian media that suggested the Korean company had already resolved to withdraw from the championship. This report also indicated that if Hyundai ceases participation, the WRC’s premier class could transition to Rally2 cars starting next year.

After a shakedown session during the Safari Rally Kenya, Neuville acknowledged the ambiguity surrounding the team’s future but was clear in countering the insinuations of a finalized decision. Sources close to Hyundai also revealed that while a decision about 2026 is anticipated before summer, nothing has been officially determined.

“We were all surprised by these rumors, which are obviously unfounded,” Neuville stated. “These claims seemed to have emerged merely to stir conversation. It’s disappointing because it does not respect the hard work and the commitment of everyone on the team who strives to excel and sustain this program.”

He further emphasized, “While Hyundai’s future is indeed uncertain, perpetuating unfounded rumors does not help the situation. It’s appropriate to let those in charge decide our trajectory.”

Hyundai has been a fixture in the WRC since its return in 2014, earning manufacturers’ titles in both 2019 and 2020, with Neuville capturing the drivers’ championship last season. The team has also introduced four homologation jokers this year to enhance the performance of its i20 N Rally1 vehicle.

However, uncertainty about Hyundai’s WRC participation has been palpable since the brand confirmed its commitment to compete through 2025, while remaining silent about its intentions beyond that date.

Concerns about Hyundai’s future have heightened alongside its plans to enter the World Endurance Championship (WEC) under the Genesis brand, a move announced late last year. The situation escalated when Neuville was offered a one-year contract extension last September, further fueling speculation that Hyundai’s WRC program might potentially transition to a privately-operated model by 2026.

Neuville acknowledged that his own long-term plans in the WRC are likely contingent on Hyundai’s evolving strategy. Last year, the WRC announced it would implement new regulations for 2027, shifting towards Rally2-specification cars, a move aimed at retaining current manufacturers while attracting new teams to the championship.

Insights from Teammate Ott Tänak

Neuville’s teammate, Ott Tänak, also weighed in on the topic, remarking, “At this stage, so many possibilities are on the table, making it challenging to provide any clarity.” He noted that the internal team dynamics reflect uncertainty, stating, “Right now, everything is open. The future regulations and team plans are all still under discussion.”

Cyril Abiteboul, team principal of Hyundai, highlighted the commitment to improving the i20 N Rally1 car for the upcoming season, which indicates the brand’s interest in remaining competitive in the short term. He asserted, “Our objective is to continue for many years, and we have arrangements with Neuville that align with that vision. However, decisions regarding Hyundai’s future in the WRC beyond 2026 are still pending. Our immediate focus should remain on 2024 and 2025.”

Conclusion

As Hyundai navigates its future in the WRC amidst rising speculation, the coming months will be crucial for setting a clear direction. The feedback from key team figures like Neuville and Tänak emphasizes a collective commitment to performance while awaiting decisive moves from the brand’s leadership.
