I Approached My Health as a Business and Transformed My Life

Throughout much of my adult life, I have navigated two distinct realms.

On one side, I served as a CEO, implementing intricate strategies, fostering company growth, mentoring leaders, and addressing audiences worldwide about achieving scalability without unnecessary complications. On the flip side, I faced a personal hurdle that seemed insurmountable: maintaining my weight.

Since my thirties, I have grappled with health issues. I would shed a few pounds only to regain them. I would start a diet, only to abandon it later. I would join a gym but fail to follow through. Each time, I rationalized my inability to prioritize my health with the demands of running a company.

A pivotal moment arrived during a conversation with a fellow CEO, who posed a straightforward yet profound question: “Why not apply the same level of attention to your health as you do to your business?”

This question resonated deeply within me.

In reality, I possessed the knowledge and skills necessary for success. Each day, I guide leaders on how to implement agile methodologies and execute strategies. I assist businesses in transitioning from chaos to clarity. I understand the intricacies of building sustainable systems and fostering accountability.

What if I integrated my professional discipline into my personal health journey? This idea marked the inception of my transformation.

Adapting Business Execution for Personal Success

A well-known assertion in the business world is, “Ideas are easy — execution is everything.”

Execution is the linchpin for growth in business. Over the years, I’ve witnessed organizations thrive or decline based on their adherence to three fundamental execution disciplines:

  • Defining clear priorities and goals
  • Ensuring visibility through metrics
  • Maintaining a consistent rhythm of regular evaluations

Upon dedicating myself to improving my health, I resolved to implement these three principles in my own life.

1. Define a Clear and Specific Goal

In the business arena, we stress that clarity supersedes cleverness. It’s insufficient to merely assert, “I want to grow.” One must specify the magnitude, timeframe, and significance of the growth. Only then can execution be meaningful.

For a long time, I simply declared, “I want to lose weight,” which is akin to a CEO stating, “We want to increase revenue.” Such vague aspirations lack commitment.

Consequently, I refined my approach.

I established a concrete goal: to lose 10 kilograms within 90 days—not solely for aesthetic reasons but to enhance my well-being, sleep quality, and vitality to effectively lead, speak, travel, and engage with my community.

This clarity transformed my focus. I now had a definitive target, timeline, and commitment.

2. Develop a Dashboard to Monitor Progress

A significant factor contributing to organizational drift is a lack of real-time data visibility. When decisions stem from assumptions rather than facts, the outcomes are often misguided. This is where dashboards become essential, as they present the truth plainly.

I created a personal dashboard.

Initially, it was a simple spreadsheet, but it tracked vital metrics: weight, exercise sessions, meals, sleep quality, and energy levels. I reviewed it weekly, much like a business report.

Some weeks I found myself gaining weight while others saw missed workouts. However, instead of berating myself, I analyzed the data as a CEO would: What variables had changed? Which strategies were effective? What adjustments were necessary?

This data-driven approach eliminated the emotional turmoil. Rather than succumbing to frustration, I adopted a strategic mindset that aided my consistency and focus.

3. Institute a Meeting Cadence

Every successful organization maintains a structured meeting schedule, from daily huddles to monthly strategic reviews. These meetings foster alignment, accountability, and momentum.

So, why not apply the same structure to my health?

Thus, I incorporated order into my previously chaotic efforts. I instituted weekly self-assessments. Every Sunday, I evaluated my progress, identified trends, and strategized for the upcoming week. I also engaged others—my wife assisted in meal planning, and I consulted regularly with a health coach for accountability.

This routine provided my personal pursuits with the same rhythm I relied on professionally, ensuring I remained grounded and made the process feel achievable.

The Outcomes and the Fundamental Lesson

I was successful in losing weight.

However, the significant outcome was the reclamation of control over my health.

My energy levels surged, and my sleep grew deeper and more restorative. I approached meetings and public engagements with greater presence and clarity. I realized I was not merely scaling my business but also enhancing my personal growth.

The key takeaway? Execution extends beyond business; it encompasses life itself.

We often compartmentalize our experiences, dividing our roles as leader, partner, parent, and friend, as if the tools acquired in one domain cannot benefit another. However, the most effective business strategies are intrinsically human. They succeed because they cultivate clarity, structure, and commitment—elements essential in all life’s facets.

This journey imparted more lessons than just weight management; it was fundamentally about integrity.

To effectively lead others, we must first master self-leadership. To scale our ventures without sacrificing well-being, we must align our entire selves—integrating the same wisdom, discipline, and care into our personal lives that drive our business successes.

The tools for success are at our disposal. It is our choice to employ them across all areas of life.

Whether cultivating a thriving business or developing a healthier version of oneself, the approach remains consistent: establish clear goals, ensure tangible progress, and execute with discipline.

This is the pathway to growth with less drama and greater impact.
