I’d Face a 20-Year Ban If I Failed Drug Tests Like Jannik Sinner

Serena Williams recently expressed her astonishment regarding Jannik Sinner’s three-month suspension for doping. She remarked that had she been in a similar situation—specifically, if she had failed drug tests as he did—she would likely face a far harsher fate, potentially a 20-year ban along with the revocation of her Grand Slam titles.

Sinner, the current men’s world No. 1, failed two drug tests in March 2024, revealing low levels of the performance-enhancing drug clostebol. However, an independent tribunal cleared him of wrongdoing in August after accepting his defense of unintentional contamination.

Despite this ruling, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed the decision in September, seeking a more severe punishment that could have resulted in a two-year suspension.

The matter was resolved earlier this year when Sinner reached an agreement with WADA, accepting a three-month suspension from competition. This decision concluded a lengthy saga, during which the young tennis star acknowledged “partial responsibility” for errors made by his team.

The suspension runs from February 9 to May 4, allowing Sinner to participate in the French Open, slated to commence on May 25 at Roland Garros.

In an interview with Time Magazine, Williams praised Sinner, stating, “He’s a fantastic personality. I love this guy, I love this game. He’s great for the sport.”

However, she also pointed out the disparities in treatment regarding doping allegations, asserting, “If I did that, I would have gotten 20 years. Let’s be honest. I would have gotten Grand Slams taken away from me.”

Throughout her illustrious career, Williams won 23 Grand Slam titles, and she emphasized the extreme caution with which she approached her health, stating that she avoided anything stronger than Advil due to the risk of unknowingly consuming banned substances.

In a lighthearted moment, she remarked that she would have ended up in severe legal trouble had she been involved in a doping scandal, quipping, “You would have heard about it in another multiverse.”

Growing Concerns About Fairness in Tennis

Williams’s comments highlight a growing sentiment among players questioning whether Sinner has received leniency. Australian player Nick Kyrgios criticized the situation on social media, stating, “Guilty or not? Sad day for tennis. Fairness in tennis does not exist.”

Stan Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, voiced his skepticism regarding the integrity of sports, declaring, “I don’t believe in a clean sport anymore.” Similarly, Canadian player Denis Shapovalov expressed his disbelief, stating, “I can’t imagine what every other player that got banned for contaminated substances is feeling right now. Different rules for different players.”

Novak Djokovic, currently ranked fifth in the world and a record 24-time major champion, noted that a significant number of players believe favoritism influences the anti-doping system in tennis. “The two cases of Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner have attracted a lot of attention, and it’s not a good image for our sport,” he remarked. “A majority of the players don’t feel that (the process is) fair. They feel like there is favoritism happening.”

Djokovic pointed out that the ability to influence outcomes appears to be more accessible to top players who can afford the best legal representation, adding weight to the discourse on equity within the sport.

In November 2024, world No. 2 Iga Swiatek accepted a one-month suspension after testing positive for the banned substance trimetazidine (TMZ), further complicating the narrative surrounding doping in the sport.
