Huawei Solidifies Its Dominance in China’s Foldable Smartphone Market
Huawei is not only maintaining its position in the foldable smartphone segment in China but is also significantly enhancing its market lead. According to recent data from IDC, Huawei shipped approximately 2.506 million foldable units in the last quarter of 2024, capturing a remarkable 48.6% of the market share. Moving into the first quarter of this year, the company has reportedly shipped 2.842 million units, now commanding an impressive 76.6% of the market.
This notable increase of 53.1% year-over-year reflects a robust recovery from the previous quarter, where Huawei experienced a notable decline of 9.5% compared to the same timeframe the year prior.
Huawei’s meteoric rise in the foldable market has come at the cost of its competitors. Honor, one of the most affected brands, witnessed a steep drop in its market share from 20.6% in Q4 2024 to a mere 9.1% by Q1 of this year.
Following Honor, Oppo managed to secure a share of 7.1% in the foldable segment, a significant improvement from its previous 5.3% in Q4. Meanwhile, vivo, which previously held the third-largest share, has completely fallen off the list, indicating a drastic change in market dynamics. Xiaomi also saw its position weaken, declining from 7.4% to just 2.6% over the same period.
It’s important to consider that both Xiaomi and vivo have not released any new foldable devices since early to mid-2024. In contrast, Oppo launched its latest model, the Find N5, only recently in February. Hence, any substantial impact from Oppo’s new device may not be evident until the second quarter of this year.
Over the past year, Huawei has introduced a variety of innovative foldable models, including the world’s first tri-foldable device, the Mate XT Ultimate, a book-style foldable known as the Mate X6, and two flip models: the Pocket 2 and nova Flip. This year, the brand has started strong with the release of the unique and inventive Pura X.
In the broader context of the smartphone market in China, vivo currently leads in overall smartphone sales, while Huawei continues to compete closely with Apple.
