If You Know, You Know: My Passion for Yachting Over Cruising

According to projections by AAA, approximately 19 million people from the United States are expected to embark on cruises in 2025, representing a 4.5% increase from the previous year. This trend underscores the rising allure of maritime travel experiences.

Until recently, I had reservations about joining the cruising community, largely due to concerns over the quality of food, service, and accommodations offered by mainstream cruise lines. My travel preferences lean towards unique boutique hotels, intimate cafes, and independent travel experiences. However, my perspective shifted dramatically after a remarkable voyage with SeaDream Yacht Club, which proved to be an unforgettable culinary and leisure experience.

First Impressions

I had the pleasure of cruising the beautiful Caribbean on the SeaDream II for a week in November, accompanied by my mother, an ideal travel partner. Upon our arrival, we were warmly welcomed with champagne, refreshing rosemary-scented towels, and a variety of appetizing snacks. The Captain, Charles, who later accompanied us on a hike, along with friendly crew members Christophe, Nicola, and Garrett, greeted us personally. My initial wonderment about how they knew our names was quickly overshadowed by a feeling of warmth and hospitality. We were treated to soothing massages by spa therapists, setting the tone for the wonderful experience that awaited us.

Entering our stateroom was a delightful experience—spacious and tastefully designed, featuring a large window overlooking the sea. The room came equipped with a kitchenette stocked with fine glassware and a separate lounge area, complete with a complimentary bottle of champagne. Our attentive stewardess, Kristine, introduced herself with a genuine smile. Each evening, we returned to find personalized turndown gifts, including custom pajamas with our names embroidered—an unexpected and cherished detail.

Intimate, VIP Service

During our journey, the ambiance felt more like an exclusive yacht getaway with friends than a traditional cruise. With only 65 guests onboard—far fewer than the thousands found on larger ships—this boutique experience created a close-knit atmosphere. We encountered a diverse mix of passengers: couples celebrating milestones, families, friends enjoying a getaway, and solo travelers. While I enjoyed the trip with my mother, I could easily see myself returning with friends or a partner.

The exceptional level of service rivaled the best available in luxury hotels, with a crew-to-guest ratio of 1:1. Staff members proactively ensured our needs were met, whether taking cocktail orders or greeting us post-excursion with cool towels and refreshing beverages. Their attentiveness left a significant impression—each crew member, from bartenders to servers, contributed to a sense of being well cared for throughout our stay.

5-Star Fare

As a food enthusiast who seeks out top-notch culinary experiences, I had high expectations for the onboard dining, and I was not disappointed. The menu featured an impressive selection of à la carte options that varied daily, ensuring a fresh experience at every meal. Highlights included succulent lobster tail, truffle pasta, shrimp pad Thai, and an array of expertly prepared dishes that catered to all dietary preferences. Special consideration was given to my gluten-free mother, illustrating the flexibility of the culinary team.

Notably, there were no hidden fees for premium dishes or cocktails—the pricing included indulgent items like caviar and exceptional wines. The artful presentation of meals and reasonable portion sizes allowed us to sample various exquisite courses during our dining experiences. Chef Tomascz, from Poland, genuinely invested in his culinary creations, even sourcing fresh ingredients directly from local markets during our port stops.

Dinners were often served alfresco when weather allowed, enhancing the culinary experience while surrounded by the breathtaking scenery. Desserts, particularly the pistachio blondies and crème brûlée, were delightful. The drinks menu was equally impressive, with bartenders crafting unique cocktails that became a highlight of our evenings.

Conversations with fellow guests revealed the enthusiasm and loyalty many had for SeaDream. A veteran cruiser shared how accommodating the culinary staff was, illustrating the personalized service philosophy that defines the SeaDream experience.

A Caribbean Dream

Our Caribbean cruise, which began in San Juan, Puerto Rico, included stops at several stunning islands such as Jost Van Dyke, Anguilla, St. Bart’s, and Nevis. The small size of the SeaDream yacht allowed us to visit more secluded destinations, enhancing the exclusivity of our journey. One memorable event was the “Champagne Caviar Splash” in Jost Van Dyke, where guests enjoyed a lavish beach barbecue amidst the tropical surroundings. Unique excursions offered a variety of activities, ranging from snorkeling to hiking, maximizing our engagement with each destination.

A standout moment occurred when Captain Charles invited my mother and me on a hike at Terre-de-Haut in Guadeloupe. Although he described the hike as easy, it proved to be a more challenging adventure with breathtaking views from the summit. Sharing the experience with him added a personal touch, as he shared stories from his extensive sailing career as a third-generation captain.

Diversions at Sea

On board, days were blissfully spent by the saltwater pool or lounging on comfortable Balinese beds. My mother particularly enjoyed the Jacuzzis and relaxing areas. SeaDream also offers a variety of water activities, including jet skis, banana boats, and paddle boards, along with the first-ever water slide on a cruise ship, allowing guests to plunge directly into the sea, a nostalgic experience for guests of all ages.

In addition to water play, there were golf simulators, board games, tai chi, yoga, and bicycle rentals available for entertainment. Evening activities included cocktail parties, movie nights, dancing, and casino games. I indulged in a luxurious Thai massage and a manicure at the spa, which was the only Thai-certified spa at sea. A “Sleeping Under the Stars” experience allowed guests to enjoy the night sky while relaxing on a Bali bed adorned with soft blankets.

Final Reflections

A fellow guest expressed an almost addictive attraction to the SeaDream experience, a sentiment echoed by others who had made multiple voyages. The small-ship cruising model offered by SeaDream presents a stark contrast to traditional cruising, with a reputation built on exceptional service, exquisite dining, and a personable atmosphere. Family-owned and operated, SeaDream maintains an accessible luxury vibe, devoid of any pretentiousness while fostering connections among passengers.

As someone who enjoyed the seamless all-inclusive nature of the cruise—where every expense was accounted for and tips were covered—I’m left contemplating when my next adventure with SeaDream will unfold, whether it be in the picturesque Mediterranean, captivating Northern Europe, or alluring Caribbean.
