The Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary, located in Brock Township, Ontario, is urgently seeking financial assistance following a recent ice storm that caused power outages and disrupted their electric water supply.
This sanctuary is known as the home of Darwin, a Japanese macaque who gained notoriety after being spotted in an Ikea store in North York back in 2012.
According to volunteer Jaqcueline Waldorf, the sanctuary experienced a power failure on Saturday. While they have backup generators, they face a significant challenge due to the lack of running water. Waldorf explained to Global News, “We have generators fortunately, however, we don’t have water.”
To manage this crisis, employees and volunteers are taking extra shifts and are even transporting bottled water from local stores. “It’s a lot having to bring in more water. It’s heavy,” Waldorf added. She noted that the inability to do laundry and wash dishes has compounded difficulties at the facility.
Despite the situation, Waldorf reassured that the animals are safe and are currently in good spirits, but the sanctuary is in dire need of financial contributions.

Waldorf pointed out that donations will play a crucial role in addressing both the aftermath of the storm and the ongoing maintenance needs of the sanctuary, which have increased due to the recent challenges. She emphasized that “these animals … would prefer to be in their natural habitats. … They don’t belong here.”
Waldorf passionately stated, “The least we can do for them since we took them out of their natural environment is to care for them and give them a sanctuary.”
While warmer weather has recently settled in, Global News meteorologist Anthony Farnell has warned that further winter conditions are anticipated. He observed, “The winter chill doesn’t want to leave, but eventually summer and the warmth wins out.” He cautioned that the transitional period between seasons can lead to unpredictable weather, including ice storms, and indicated that another chance for snow flurries and squalls could emerge early next week, suggesting that the sanctum is not yet fully in the clear.
