Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton Launches Senate Campaign Following Durbin’s Retirement Announcement
In a significant political development, Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton (D) officially declared her candidacy for the U.S. Senate on Thursday, becoming the first prominent Democrat to enter the race for the seat currently held by retiring Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.). This announcement follows closely on the heels of Durbin’s decision, shared just one day prior, to not seek another term in office.
In her statement regarding her campaign, Stratton emphasized the need for fresh leadership in Washington, particularly in light of ongoing challenges posed by figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk. “As they continue their relentless attack on Americans, we need new voices who will stand firm and fight fiercely to move us forward and protect the values we hold dear,” she articulated, asserting her commitment to advocate for the citizens of Illinois.
The Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association (DLGA) quickly signaled its support, pledging an endorsement along with a substantial seven-figure financial commitment to bolster Stratton’s campaign efforts. Pennsylvania Lt. Governor Austin Davis (D), who chairs the DLGA, remarked, “Democratic lieutenant governors are the Democratic Party’s bench, and with these types of investments, we look forward to helping to elect the next generation of Governors and Senators across the country.”
Durbin’s announcement on Wednesday marked his intention to step down after serving five terms. In a video released on social media, he expressed that “it’s time to pass the torch,” setting the stage for what promises to be a highly competitive primary for the upcoming vacancy.
Stratton’s entry into the race could signal a wider contest within the Democratic Party, as it is anticipated that other prominent figures such as Representatives Robin Kelly, Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Lauren Underwood may also seek the nomination.
On the Republican side, interest is growing, with Illinois Representative Darin LaHood hinting at a possible candidacy for the seat, adding another layer of contention to the race.
The Cook Political Report, recognized for its impartial electoral assessments, has characterized Durbin’s Senate seat as “solid Democrat,” indicating strong support for the party in this district and suggesting that the Democratic primary could ultimately determine the successor to Durbin’s long-held position.
