Illinois Teacher Arrested for Allegedly Molesting Student
Recently released police bodycam footage has unveiled the emotional turmoil experienced by a school teacher in Illinois following her arrest on charges of molesting a 15-year-old student. The incident took place last month, and the footage shows Christina Formella, 30, being apprehended during a routine traffic stop. She faces serious allegations of engaging in inappropriate sexual conduct with a student approximately two years ago.
Formella is accused of sexually assaulting the young boy during a tutoring session held in a classroom before school hours at Downers Grove South High School in December 2023. The situation came to light when the boy’s mother discovered concerning messages on her son’s phone, prompting her to notify law enforcement, according to prosecutors.
Background on the Allegations
The charges against Formella stem from a series of exchanges that occurred after she began tutoring the student post-injury when he fractured his collarbone. Communication escalated through a school messaging platform, reportedly leading to inappropriate texts and FaceTime conversations which culminated in the December encounter. In one exchange, the student allegedly expressed affection with messages like, “I love you so so much mama,” to which Formella, then 28, replied, “I love you sooooo much baby… Even though this morning was short, it was perfect.”
Documentation reveals that both acknowledged the inappropriateness of their actions and agreed not to engage in intimate contact again after their last communication in February 2024. Despite harsh evidence, Formella maintains her innocence, claiming that the minor had infiltrated her phone to send himself suggestive texts as part of an alleged blackmail scheme.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The bodycam video captures Formella’s bewilderment as officers approach her vehicle. After her arrest, she is seen visibly distressed, requesting to speak with her husband, whom she married last year. Throughout the footage, she expresses feelings of nausea and emotional distress.
In response to the charges, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin expressed serious concern, labeling the allegations as “extremely disturbing.” He emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for using their positions of authority to exploit minors.
Currently, Formella is charged with multiple counts, including aggravated criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual assault. Although she has been released from custody with certain conditions, including no contact with individuals under the age of 18 and prohibiting entry to her workplace, she is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 14.
