Imtiaz Ali Looks Forward to National Awards Recognition for ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’
Imtiaz Ali’s film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ has garnered significant acclaim, being awarded The Breakout Film of the Year at the 15th Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM). With this recognition, the director expresses hope for continued success, particularly with an eye on the upcoming National Awards. This biographical drama shines a light on the life of the iconic Punjabi singer, often dubbed the “Elvis Presley of Punjab,” and was released on Netflix on April 12, 2024, marking Ali’s first venture into streaming platforms.
During the IFFM awards ceremony, which took place on Friday, Ali shared his thoughts about the movie’s recognition. He acknowledged the initial doubts regarding the eligibility of direct-to-digital films for awards, yet he remains optimistic following recent positive developments in this area. His enthusiasm suggests that ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ could be a strong contender at the National Awards.
Ali noted, “There was confusion about whether films that are released direct-to-digital will be allowed to participate in National Awards but I think there’s a verdict on that now which is in favour of direct-to-digital films. I’m hoping the National Awards will look kindly on Amar Singh Chamkila.”
The film, headlined by actor Diljit Dosanjh, is characterized by its ability to connect with audiences across various demographics, not just those from urban centers. Ali expressed his hope that the film’s broad appeal would resonate with the public, thereby increasing its chances of being acknowledged at the National Awards. He stated, “What I personally liked about the film is that it is made out of metros and mini-metros, and it goes into the heartland of India, where most of the country lives. I’m hopeful that the population of the country will appreciate that.”
Winning The Breakout Film of the Year at the IFFM holds special significance for Ali, as he considers audience appreciation to be the ultimate measure of success. While he acknowledges the joy that comes with awards, Ali is eager to see how the popularity of his film translates into future accolades. He believes that winning such recognition could pave the way for increased visibility for films of a similar nature.
He remarked, “The validation that I seek is the warmth and popularity among the audience as a filmmaker. (But) It does make me feel happy to receive an award. I hope the popularity of the film is reflected in the awards as well. I’m sure everyone in the unit will be happy about the awards. Hopefully, the Breakout Film Award will start a trend.”
