When news broke that OnePlus intends to phase out its long-standing alert slider, it brought a wave of disappointment among fans. This feature has been integral to OnePlus’s identity, much like their SuperVOOC charging and the signature green finish introduced with the OnePlus 8 series. To be candid, the primary reason I won’t miss the alert slider is my infrequent use of it. Most of the time, I leave my phone on vibrate, regardless of whether I’m using an iPhone, a Pixel device, or something innovative like the Nothing Phone 3a. While I occasionally switch my phone to sound mode for an urgent call or critical notification, that is a rare occurrence. As such, having a hardware button solely dedicated to this function didn’t seem practical for more frequent tasks.
Moreover, I found accessing the alert slider cumbersome. Situated high on the side of OnePlus devices, it often required two hands to operate accurately, especially while handling the device in a pocket. Over time, I adapted to using the volume rockers to manage sound levels, which facilitated a more versatile experience by allowing adjustments to ringtone, notifications, and media individually.
However, I understand that for many loyal OnePlus users, the alert slider has been a crucial part of their daily interactions with the device. For those who’ve relied on it, the transition to a new design may feel unsettling. It is worth noting, though, that the alert slider isn’t disappearing entirely; rather, it will be integrated into a different functionality with the upcoming OnePlus 14 or OnePlus Open 2.
Embracing New Possibilities
Contrary to the belief that OnePlus is discarding a unique feature, the company is evolving the alert slider into something more multifunctional. The shift can be seen as a natural progression rather than merely imitating Apple. This modification presents an opportunity for greater flexibility in how users interact with their devices.
Reflecting on Apple’s Action Button, I recognize that a dedicated mute function doesn’t add practical value when volume rockers already provide sound control. What would be more beneficial is a button that allows quick toggles for features like Do Not Disturb, instant camera access, or a rapid launch for applications like Google Translate. These functionalities could provide added convenience if OnePlus implements a truly versatile action button, offering users various customization options.
What I find limiting about Apple’s approach is its restriction on the Action Button to a single function at a time. Users can set it for various tasks, but they must choose just one, with no additional options for action-triggering methods. If OnePlus capitalizes on this change, they could create a multifunctional key that allows for broader possibilities—adapting to user preferences and improving the overall smartphone experience. Even if this change results in fewer complaints about unwanted features like Bixby, it would mark a noteworthy success for OnePlus.
