In 2024, the personal computer (PC) market in India experienced a notable 3.8 percent increase in sales compared to the previous year, according to a report by IDC, a prominent market research firm. Total shipments of desktops, notebooks, and workstations reached 14.4 million units, with HP leading the market, followed by Lenovo and Dell. Acer and Asus also secured positions within the top five PC vendors in the country. The growth in the market was attributed to increased procurement from the public sector along with a surge in demand for gaming and AI-enhanced PCs.
IDC’s findings indicate that among the total shipments, there was a 4.5 percent year-over-year (YoY) rise in notebook shipments and a 1.8 percent increase in desktop shipments. Workstations achieved the strongest growth rate at 10.9 percent. In the final quarter of 2024, the overall PC market grew by 6.9 percent, propelled by an impressive 9.6 percent YoY growth in the notebook segment. Premium notebooks specifically saw a remarkable growth of 13.8 percent YoY, while the consumer segment saw an increase of 2.6 percent YoY and the commercial segment grew by 5.1 percent YoY. Notably, the enterprise and government markets reflected robust growth at 10.6 percent YoY.
Leading Players in the PC Market
As previously noted, HP dominated the Indian PC market in 2024 with a commanding 30.1 percent share. Despite witnessing a decline of 7.5 percent YoY in its consumer segment, its enterprise and government divisions flourished, with growth rates of 14.7 percent and 14.3 percent respectively.
Lenovo captured the second spot, accounting for a 17.2 percent share of the market and witnessing growth in both consumer and commercial segments at rates of 7 percent and 7.4 percent YoY. The brand’s success was bolstered by strong shipments to the enterprise market and a consistent emphasis on eTailer distribution.
According to the report, Dell ranked third with a 16.1 percent market share, while Acer followed closely in fourth with 15.1 percent. Acer experienced remarkable growth, notably in the consumer segment, achieving a staggering 48.4 percent YoY uplift, thanks largely to its aggressive pricing strategies and substantial discounts. Asus rounded out the top five with a 7 percent market share, successfully maintaining robust inventory levels and achieving an 18.4 percent growth YoY in the commercial sector.
Bharath Shenoy, IDC Research Manager, highlighted the consumer PC market’s upward trajectory, attributing it to the rising popularity of gaming and AI-enhanced PCs. He noted a significant increase in shipments of AI-powered notebooks, particularly those equipped with Intel’s Core Ultra processors and AMD’s Ryzen AI processors, since mid-2024.
Navkendar Singh, Associate Vice President of Devices Research at IDC India, emphasized that the commercial PC market’s expansion is fueled by substantial refresh orders and increasing public sector investments. He anticipates a wave of replacement demand as devices purchased in 2020-21 reach the end of their typical lifecycle. However, he cautioned that a declining rupee could lead to rising prices, potentially affecting price-sensitive small and medium businesses (SMBs) and individual consumers. Looking ahead, the report predicts modest single-digit growth for the Indian PC market in 2025.
