Tony Awards Committee Confirms Eligibility for 2024-2025 Season
The Tony Awards Administration Committee convened today to establish the eligibility status for a selection of Broadway productions ahead of the 2025 Tony Awards. This marks the first meeting of the committee in this award season, as they prepare for the illustrious 78th Annual Tony Awards.
The productions under review included “Home,” “Oh, Mary!,” “Job,” “Once Upon a Mattress,” “The Roommate,” “The Hills of California,” “McNeal,” “Yellow Face,” “Thornton Wilder’s Our Town,” “Left on Tenth,” and “Romeo + Juliet.”
In their discussions, the committee concluded the following:
Tory Kittles is recognized as eligible for Best Lead Actor in a Play for his impressive performance in “Home.”
Cole Escola is also deemed eligible for Best Lead Actor in a Play for their role in “Oh, Mary!”
For “Job,” both Peter Friedman and Sydney Lemmon will be placed in consideration for Best Lead Actor/Actress in a Play for their notable performances.
Laura Donnelly has secured eligibility for Best Lead Actress in a Play due to her leading role in “The Hills of California.”
In the Best Scenic Design of a Play category, Michael Yeargan and Jake Barton will be jointly eligible for their designs in “McNeal.”
“Yellow Face” has been acknowledged as eligible for Best Revival of a Play, with David Henry Hwang recognized as the author eligible for consideration.
Jim Parsons will also vie for Best Lead Actor in a Play for his portrayal in “Thornton Wilder’s Our Town.”
Beowulf Boritt and Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew will be considered together in the Best Scenic Design of a Play category for their work in “Left on Tenth.”
As a reminder, the eligibility for Tony Awards is based on the billing order seen in the Playbill during the opening night. Performers listed above the title are classified as lead actors, while those listed below are considered featured, unless specified otherwise in the eligibility confirmations.
The outcomes of this eligibility review were mostly in line with industry expectations. Notably, Laura Donnelly has been confirmed as the sole lead in her production, allowing her to compete independently in her category. In contrast, her co-stars Leanne Best, Ophelia Lovibond, and Helena Wilson will contend for a spot in Best Featured Actress. Additionally, Cole Escola, a non-binary performer in “Oh, Mary!”, will qualify as a lead actor, following in the footsteps of previous non-binary Tony winners J. Harrison Ghee and Alex Newell, who also competed in the “actor” category. The Tony Awards typically allow non-binary performers the choice to be considered in either the actor or actress categories.
However, no eligibility decisions were announced for the main performers in “McNeal,” “Once Upon a Mattress,” or “The Roommate.” Consequently, leading stars such as Robert Downey Jr., Sutton Foster, Mia Farrow, and Patti LuPone will enter the competition for lead acting, while their respective co-stars will participate in the featured acting races.
The 2025 Tony Awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, June 8, at the renowned Radio City Music Hall. For productions to be eligible for this year’s awards, their opening nights must take place by Sunday, April 27. The nominations will be revealed on Thursday, May 1.
