Transforming a Historic Space: A Stylish Kitchen Renovation in the Upper West Side
Embarking on a renovation journey in a 1910 Upper West Side townhouse, the homeowners envisioned their kitchen as the centerpiece of their living space. Shea Buckner, one of the owners, expressed their desire to create a luxurious green kitchen that would naturally serve as the heart of their home. With a clear vision in mind, Buckner and his partner, actor Martyna Frankow, collaborated with Matt Bidgoli from Perifio Interiors to turn their dreams into reality.
The couple’s creative backgrounds significantly influenced the design process. Bidgoli noted their affinity for vibrant colors and modern aesthetics, which further motivated the project. They aimed for a kitchen that felt both classic and contemporary, offering a warm, livable atmosphere.
Attracted by Perifio Interiors’ previous work showcased in a beautiful home in rural Hudson, New York, Buckner and Frankow felt an instant connection. Their encounter at a mutual friend’s gathering solidified their decision, recognizing that these designers were the perfect fit for their new 800-square-foot residence just steps from Central Park. This project marked the firm’s first venture into Manhattan design.
“Martyna and I were captivated by the rich history of the prewar brownstones that line our street,” Buckner reflected, acknowledging that while the charm of the building was appealing, significant renovations were indeed necessary.
The renovation process involved extensive structural updates that spanned a year and a half. Although the apartment features impressive high ceilings, which create an illusion of spaciousness, it required new walls, preservation of select original brick elements, the installation of new hardwood flooring, and a complete overhaul of the bathroom. The kitchen also underwent significant transformation, evolving from a simple eat-in area to one highlighted by a striking statement island. Buckner emphasized the importance of maintaining the prewar character while integrating a modern aesthetic, particularly given the apartment’s lofty 20-foot ceilings.
In a bid to retain the original architectural details, special attention was given to the steel-case windows that overlook the picturesque tree-lined street. Enhancing this feature, a newly installed window seat with luxurious velvet upholstery from Kravet serves as both a cozy spot to relax and a functional daybed.
The thoughtful renovation process not only respects the building’s historical integrity but also ensures the space meets the modern lifestyle needs of its creative inhabitants.
