Transforming a Greenwich Village Apartment: A Designer’s Touch

When Jordan Williams decided to buy his unique Greenwich Village apartment, a 900-square-foot one-bedroom duplex featuring an expansive terrace, he received valuable advice from his mother: to hire an interior designer. Reflecting on her suggestion, Williams recalls, “It was a blank canvas, the outdoor space was just totally abandoned, and she said, ‘You don’t understand the challenges that you have.’ She was right.” With that insight in mind, he set out to find a professional who could help bring his vision to life.

Williams turned to the AD PRO Directory to find an interior designer who could reimagine his space. He was particularly drawn to the work of Alvin Wayne, noting the inventive use of color and texture in his designs. “I found it to be really inventive for its use of color and texture. And it’s bold,” Williams explains. Given his collection of art and vintage objects, he felt Wayne’s approach resonated with his existing possessions and personal taste.

Wayne was eager to collaborate with Williams and was inspired by his eclectic collection, which included striking pieces like a graphic, sewn-canvas artwork by Ethan Cook and a vintage coffee table by Giuseppe Rivadossi. “He wanted it to feel designed, but still comfortable; he wanted it to be colorful, but not crazy,” Wayne recalls. He was confident that he could bring a fun and refined twist to the space while honoring Williams’s existing possessions.

Reflecting on the apartment’s renovation, Williams notes the significance of the staircase, which remained untouched during the renovation process, adding a unique charm to the home. “They redid the floors, but they left the staircase as it was, so that was a really special piece,” he says. Additionally, the front door, dating back to 1955, adds a nostalgic New York character to the space. For the project, Wayne enlisted Emilio Lucas of Lucas Construction, ensuring that the redesign would reflect both functionality and artistic flair.
