Insta360 Launches Versatile New Action Camera: The X5

Insta360 has unveiled its latest 360-degree action camera, the X5, designed for the adventurous user who might face challenges during extreme activities. This updated model enhances user-friendliness with its innovative lens system. While last year’s X4 introduced a protective removable guard for its lenses, the X5 takes it a step further by making the lenses themselves user-replaceable, aiming to reduce electronic waste in case of accidental damage.

The Insta360 X5 is now available for purchase from the company’s online store as well as various retailers. The starting price for the standard version is set at $549.99, which includes essential accessories like a charging cable and a pouch. For those seeking extra features, a bundle priced at $659.99 comes with additional items such as an extra battery, a 45-inch selfie stick, lens guards, lens caps, and a carry case. Users can also purchase replacement lenses for $29.99 and extra batteries for $44.99 each.

A standout feature of the X5 is its lenses, crafted from a new ultra-durable glass that promises improved resilience. Alongside this, the camera boasts enhanced 1/1.28-inch sensors that can capture more light, which may lead to better performance in low-light settings. To further elevate low-light shooting, the X5 introduces a PureVideo mode, which utilizes advanced AI noise reduction and dynamic range optimization to produce vibrant and clear footage even in dim conditions.

While video capabilities are comparable to the X4—maxing out at 8K resolution at 30 frames per second (fps), the X5 offers alternatives as well. The camera can operate at 60 fps in a 5.7K resolution and even reach 120 fps for slow-motion recordings at 4K. This enhancement represents a slight evolution from the previous model, which capped at 4K/100 fps for high-speed shooting. Additionally, still images can be captured at an impressive 72 megapixels.

For users eager to share their adventures on social media, the X5 features a new InstaFrame mode that records two videos simultaneously: one flat video capturing either a fixed direction or focusing on the user’s face, and a full 360-degree clip that encapsulates the surrounding scene.

Battery life has also seen enhancements; the X5 is equipped with a removable 2,400mAh battery, extending the recording time to a notable 88 minutes at 8K/30 fps, up from the X4’s 75 minutes. Users opting for a lower resolution of 5K/30 fps can record up to 135 minutes, and even longer at 5K/24 fps, reaching up to 185 minutes.

Furthermore, the Inst360 X5 boasts an improved IP68 water resistance rating, allowing it to operate effectively at depths of up to 49 feet, eliminating the need for additional dive housing. An added feature, “Twist to Shoot,” enables users to quickly begin recording by twisting a selfie stick back and forth, making it easy to start capturing moments even in noisy environments where voice commands may fail.
