Instagram has officially started testing a new feature designed to enhance user interaction by allowing individuals to downvote comments deemed irrelevant or unappealing. The introduction of the ‘dislike’ button is aimed at both Feed posts and Reels, although the platform will not display the total number of dislikes publicly. Instead, this feedback will influence how comments are ranked on the platform.
Instagram Experimenting with Dislike Functionality
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, shared insights about this new feature in a post on Threads. He highlighted that this private dislike option gives users a means to privately indicate their disapproval of certain comments. “This gives people a private way to signal that they don’t feel good about that particular comment,” he explained.
The dislike count will remain hidden to maintain user privacy, meaning others will not see how many dislikes a comment has received. However, it is anticipated that this feedback could be integrated into the way comments are ranked, potentially pushing less favorable comments further down the list.
According to Mosseri, the primary intention behind implementing the dislike button is to foster a more positive atmosphere in the comments section of Instagram. The button can be found next to comments on posts and Reels, with select users already piloting this feature.
This approach resembles similar mechanisms seen on platforms like Reddit, where users can downvote content. Interestingly, while YouTube previously featured dislike counts for videos, it ceased displaying these numbers in 2021, redirecting focus towards the overall user experience.
In addition to the dislike button, Instagram is reported to be exploring other enhancements, including the introduction of Community Notes and a new Edits tool designed for high-quality video capture and an improved editing workflow.
