Instagram Unveils Edits: A New Video Editing App for Creators
Instagram has officially launched Edits, a video editing application designed to compete with CapCut, which is linked to TikTok. Originally announced in January, Edits is now available for free on both iOS and Android platforms.
Marketed as a “video creation app designed for creators,” Edits offers various tools that cater to video project management, including features for tracking notes and ideas, as well as analytics concerning video performance. In addition to these management tools, it boasts advanced editing capabilities that surpass those available in the traditional Instagram app. Features such as AI-generated animations from static images, green screen replacement, and subject cutouts are among the highlights.
The functionality of Edits closely mirrors that of CapCut, which is developed by ByteDance, the company behind TikTok. Interestingly, Edits was announced during a brief period when both TikTok and CapCut were unavailable in US app stores, hinting at Meta’s intent to position Edits as a direct rival to CapCut.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, recognized the parallels between the two applications when Edits was introduced. He stated on Threads that Edits would cater more specifically to creators rather than casual video users. In interactions with The Verge’s Chris Welch, he expressed confidence that Edits would evolve into a platform distinct from CapCut, offering a wider array of creative tools aimed at a more specialized audience.
Looking ahead, Instagram is already hinting at additional features that will come to Edits, such as keyframes, enhanced AI editing capabilities, and the possibility to collaborate on video content with other users.
