Welcome to Reality Derby, our weekly examination of all aspects of reality television, guided by Gold Derby’s senior editors, Marcus James Dixon and Denton Davidson.
This week, we have the pleasure of speaking with David Genat, the champion of Deal or No Deal Island Season 2, who achieved a groundbreaking milestone in American game show history by winning $5.8 million during the finale on March 25. Known affectionately as the “Golden God,” David gained fame through his participation in Australian Survivor, where he emerged victorious in All Stars and competed in Champions v Contenders before entering the NBC game show arena. Be sure to check out our video interview for more insights.
“It’s incredible,” David reflects on his record-setting victory. “As I embarked on this journey through reality shows, the notion of winning such a substantial amount of money was beyond my wildest dreams. It’s been an intense experience that far exceeds anything I ever envisioned.”
During the final rounds, David describes himself as feeling “calm” despite the overwhelming stakes. “I experienced a profound connection to my late father and a spiritual sense of guidance,” he shares. “At that moment, I had an intuitive sense of where the $12.2 million case was located. I felt a certainty that briefcase seven contained the big prize. I had come to terms with accepting the $5.8 million offer while contemplating various scenarios for the outcome.”

David expresses his passion for television, stating, “Creating television content is truly a delight for me. At my core, I consider myself a character in that realm.” This season also spotlighted his “family” alliance members, Parvati Shallow and Dickson Wong, who secured fourth and sixth places, respectively, while Alexis Lete was the runner-up, and Courtney “CK” Kim claimed third.
Concerned about how his previous title as an Australian Survivor winner might affect his dynamics on DONDI, particularly with Dickson, David acknowledges, “Yes, it crossed my mind. However, I aimed to transform that perception into a positive narrative, suggesting that my past achievements reflected my capability and skill in this game!”
The newest Banker in Season 2, Chrissy Teigen, previously modeled briefcases on the original version of Deal or No Deal. David relates to her, saying, “Her background in modeling creates a unique connection between us. It was amusing to see her attempt to embody the traditionally stern Banker role, given that she is inherently such a warm and kind person.”
Looking ahead, David shares his aspirations: “I definitely want to explore opportunities in other shows. The financial security I now have allows me to be selective about my projects. I am eager to engage with exciting opportunities, and I’m not afraid to decline those that don’t resonate with me.” He admits he would “love” to participate in The Traitors and jokes about being the “most honest player,” suggesting he could be the best Faithful contestant of all time.
As a testament to his feat, David’s $5.8 million win places him above the notable trio of Jeopardy! titans, Ken Jennings ($5,296,214), Brad Rutter ($5,153,436), and James Holzhauer ($3,772,549) on the list of American game show winnings.
