Researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) are pioneering this concept through their innovative program called “InteRecon.” This groundbreaking tool allows users to capture real-world objects via a mobile application, bringing them to life in mixed-reality settings.
InteRecon stands out by not just recreating static images of objects but facilitating their animated interactions. This capability enhances the emotional connection users have with their memories, as it can mimic movements like a bobblehead nodding or a classic video playing on a virtual rendition of a vintage television. Presenting at the upcoming 2025 ACM CHI Conference, lead author Zisu Li, a visiting researcher at CSAIL and a PhD student at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, emphasizes the significance of combining memory preservation with interactivity. “Traditional images and videos provide a snapshot of memories, but they lack the dynamism many users desire. With InteRecon, memories can be more vibrant in virtual environments as interactive artifacts,” explains Li.
A Deeper Dive into InteRecon
To make this interactive replication possible, Li and her team crafted an intuitive iPhone app. Users capture their item by scanning it from multiple angles. The resulting 3D model can then be enhanced within the InteRecon interface, where specific areas of an object can be marked for interactivity—whether it’s a doll’s limbs or the interface of a nostalgic electronic device.
Users can explore and select from various programmable motions once an object has been segmented, facilitating a more hands-on approach to animation. For example, options are provided to animate a bunny doll’s ears to move in a realistic manner. Users can experiment with various movements such as sliding or swinging, enriching the interactive experience.
Bringing Old Electronics to Life
The versatility of InteRecon extends to electronic gadgets from the past, like vintage televisions. After capturing a model, users can customize its interface visually and functionally, choosing from widgets that recreate the experience of using the original device. Integrating features like channel selectors and play buttons can breathe life into digital reproductions, allowing users to relive their favorite moments, such as watching home videos or listening to cherished music.
Positive feedback from a user study highlights the interface’s accessibility and the diverse ways it can encapsulate the essence of users’ memories. “InteRecon captures the imperfections that make memories meaningful,” notes Faraz Faruqi SM ’22, a CSAIL affiliate and co-author of the research. “By bringing these nuances into mixed reality, users can relive their experiences more authentically.”

Moreover, Li and Faruqi are exploring advanced possibilities like integrating large language models to recreate lost personal items as 3D models from descriptive narratives. Efforts to streamline the process aim to facilitate the creation of interactive digital twins for larger environments, enhancing user experience in spaces such as virtual offices.
Experts in the field, including Hanwang Zhang, an associate professor at Nanyang Technological University, express optimism about InteRecon’s potential. “This technology is poised to transform education, healthcare, and cultural experiences by enriching virtual interactions and fostering a greater sense of connection,” Zhang observes.
