A new application is set to revolutionize the experience of watching live performances through mixed reality headsets. Scene Partners, an innovative venture focused on experiential entertainment, has unveiled StagePlay, a virtual platform aimed at extending the reach of live performances beyond traditional venues. This initiative seeks to make live entertainment accessible to audiences globally, with the inaugural performance featuring the renowned Blue Man Group.
StagePlay employs advanced performance capture technology that enables creators and performers to record their acts in stereoscopic 3D, facilitating both live and on-demand distribution. Specifically designed for mixed-reality devices such as the Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest, the StagePlay app allows viewers to engage with live entertainment experiences from the comfort of their homes.
The app makes use of cutting-edge mixed reality techniques to authentically recreate the feel of being in the venue, incorporating ultra-high-definition stereoscopic video along with immersive spatial audio. This combination provides remote viewers with access to a variety of performances, including plays, musicals, and concerts.
Matt Britten, Founder of Scene Partners, highlighted the launch of StagePlay as a pivotal moment for both the company and the live entertainment sector. “For years, creators have aspired to connect with previously unreachable audiences while preserving the essence of live performance. StagePlay makes live entertainment more accessible than ever, delivering an immersive experience regardless of location,” he stated.
The first performance available on StagePlay will feature the Blue Man Group, captured earlier this year at their original theater in New York City, celebrating over 30 years of entertaining audiences. This marks the pioneering theatrical production in the United States recorded in this innovative format for mixed-reality headset viewing, continuing Blue Man Group’s legacy of incorporating technology into their artistic expression.
“Blue Man Group is an ideal inaugural show for this platform—its dynamic performances have enchanted audiences globally, and StagePlay will enable even more fans to engage with our art,” Britten added.
Matt Ramsey, Artistic Director of Blue Man Group, echoed this sentiment, stating, “We have always sought to challenge creative limits and discover new ways to connect with our audience. Collaborating with Scene Partners to present our show on StagePlay represents an exciting progression of this goal. Now, enthusiasts everywhere can immerse themselves in the humor and spectacle of Blue Man Group, no matter where they are situated.”
Starting today, professionals within the entertainment industry can request a demonstration at StagePlay.com to preview virtual viewing experiences and enjoy an extended glimpse of Blue Man Group’s performance. Currently operating in a private beta phase, the StagePlay app is expected to be available for consumer access later this year.
Further information regarding the public launch and pricing will be shared in due course. For ongoing updates, please visit StagePlay.com.
