Chilliwack’s Kaila Mussell: A Trailblazer in Saddle Bronc Riding

While Alberta may be synonymous with rodeo culture, a remarkable rider from Chilliwack has recently made headlines by being inducted into the prestigious National Cowgirl Hall of Fame. Kaila Mussell has carved out a unique space for herself in this traditionally male-dominated sport as the only professional female saddle bronc rider in North America.

At her farm in Chilliwack, Mussell continues to embrace her pioneering spirit. “Horses have always been a significant part of my life, and I started riding practically as soon as I could walk,” she shared in an interview with Global’s This is BC.

Her competitive journey began early: she showcased her talent in barrel racing and trick riding before shifting her focus to the rough stock events, inspired by her father’s own rodeo career.

A Trailblazing Career

“I’m the first and only woman to become professional in saddle bronc riding,” Mussell stated, reflecting on her groundbreaking role in the sport. Her journey has been filled with triumphs and challenges alike.

“I broke my neck in 2014; that was one of the most significant injuries I’ve faced,” she recalled. Mussell has undergone three surgeries on her left shoulder and has experienced numerous breaks, including her collarbone multiple times on both sides.

Challenges and Achievements

From the outset, it was evident that Mussell possessed the grit and talent to compete against the very best in rodeo. “When I got my pro card, many male competitors were not particularly excited to see me on the circuit. And as I started succeeding, their concerns only grew,” she noted.

A proud member of the Skwah First Nation, her accomplishments have transcended the arena, leading to appearances in music videos and recognition in various sports halls of fame. “I have been inducted into the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame Indigenous Gallery as well as the Cowgirl Hall of Fame and Museum in Fort Worth, Texas,” Mussell explained. “Being recognized alongside the pioneering cowgirls of the late 1800s and early 1900s is truly an honor.”

Despite enduring numerous injuries, including a shattered left heel, ACL surgeries on both knees, and frequent dislocations, Mussell remains undeterred. “I could provide a long list of injuries,” she admitted, yet her passion for the sport drives her to keep competing. “I never anticipated that my journey would last this long. I’ve considered retirement several times, but ultimately, this is an integral part of who I am.”

Mussell’s story is one of resilience and determination, marking her as a significant figure in the rodeo world as she continues to inspire others with her outstanding achievements on horseback.
