At the St. Vincent’s: Langara long-term care home, a unique talent graces the piano every week—Eve Duke. Known for her captivating performances at the Jazz Café, she provides a musical experience that resonates deeply with her fellow residents.
“It brings me joy, knowing that I’m doing something they enjoy,” Duke shared about her weekly performances.
Eve Duke began her musical journey in Washington, D.C. Her breakthrough came in her early twenties when the legendary jazz composer Duke Ellington recognized her talent and invited her to join his orchestra.
“When I first performed with him, I could barely contain my nerves,” she recalled, reflecting on the excitement of that pivotal moment in her career.
Throughout her time with Ellington, she adopted the stage name Yvonne Lanauze and sang many of his beautifully composed tunes, going on to tour and record music alongside other iconic artists.
Musical Memories
Over the years, Duke has shared the stage with illustrious figures like Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, and Oscar Peterson. Wendy Solloway, a music therapist who collaborates with Duke at the Jazz Café, conveyed the significance of these experiences: “She has encountered many renowned artists and has incredible stories to tell.”
Following her move to Canada, Duke found a new home in Vancouver, where she continued to embrace her passion for music. Recently celebrating her milestone 100th birthday, she remains a vibrant presence in the local music scene.
“Music revitalizes her,” noted Lucy Thomas, another performer at the Jazz Café. “As soon as she starts playing, she transforms back to her younger self, fully immersed in the joy of performance.”
Through her artistry, Duke has not only brought happiness to herself but has also touched the lives of many who appreciate her music. “I’ve had countless people express how much they enjoyed my performance,” she remarked. “That truly warms my heart.”
