Suspicious Fire Damages Hamilton Strip Mall
In the early hours of Easter Sunday, a fire deemed suspicious broke out, causing significant damage to a strip mall located on Upper Ottawa Street in Hamilton. Fire Chief David Cunliffe reported that firefighters were dispatched to the scene just before 3 a.m.
The outbreak started in a hair and nail salon within the mall and rapidly spread to adjacent businesses, triggering multiple fire alarms. While the fire has since been extinguished, the aftermath reveals that the salon has been completely destroyed along with substantial damage to three other units. Additionally, the flames compromised the structural integrity of the roof truss above the area where the fire initiated.
Cunliffe noted that the estimated cost of the damages exceeds $1 million. He also stated that Hamilton Police are currently investigating the incident, and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been alerted to the situation, as the fire is under suspicion.
The community is on high alert following this incident, and further updates are expected as investigations continue.
