Apple has initiated the rollout of the iOS 18.1 Release Candidate (RC) to registered developers and public beta testers as of Monday. This update maintains a feature set similar to earlier beta versions, introducing enhanced customization options for home and lock screens, an updated Control Centre, an improved Photos app, and a new Passwords app, along with advancements in Apple Intelligence features. A significant new feature in this RC is the hearing aid capability for AirPods Pro 2.
Reports indicate that the stable version of iOS 18.1 for iPhone users is expected to be released later this month, with October 28 being highlighted as a probable launch date. This update will introduce the first wave of features associated with Apple Intelligence.
Highlights of the iOS 18.1 Release Candidate
As noted by Apple, the iOS 18.1 RC update offers users the ability to undergo a hearing aid assessment when using AirPods Pro 2. This test is clinically validated and designed specifically for individuals experiencing mild to moderate hearing loss. The AirPods Pro 2 can function as a customized hearing aid, adapting to the user’s unique auditory requirements. This feature is accessible when the devices are connected to an iPhone operating the iOS 18.1 RC update.
In addition to the new hearing aid feature, the RC update retains several health functionalities from previous beta versions, including Sleep Apnea detection, which monitors and reports breathing irregularities that may indicate the presence of moderate to severe Sleep Apnea, prompting users to seek further evaluation if necessary.
Moreover, the update introduces a selection of tools enhanced by Apple’s artificial intelligence capabilities. Testers can utilize a new AI-driven writing assistant that offers features like document proofreading, including spelling and grammar checks, and the ability to rewrite text in various tones such as Concise, Friendly, or Professional. Users can also benefit from an object removal tool and an automated movie creation feature within the Photos app. Additionally, a redesigned Siri interface has been implemented, highlighted by a glowing edge that appears when the voice assistant is activated.
