Apple has recently introduced the iOS 18.2 Developer Beta 1 update for iPhone users, marking a significant step ahead of the highly anticipated iOS 18.1 stable release. This new update, unveiled in the lead-up to the stable version, showcases a variety of features powered by Apple’s artificial intelligence suite, which was initially highlighted during the WWDC 2024 event in May. Among the new offerings are Image Playground, Genomoji, and integration of ChatGPT within Siri, alongside several enhancements specifically designed for the iPhone 16 series.

Supported Models for iOS 18.2 Developer Beta 1

According to Apple, any iPhone models that are compatible with the iOS 18 update are eligible to download the iOS 18.2 Developer Beta 1. Currently, the focus appears to be on devices that support Apple Intelligence, specifically the iPhone 16 series, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

New Features in iOS 18.2 Developer Beta 1

The iOS 18.2 Developer Beta 1 update expands the array of features associated with Apple Intelligence. While the previous beta iterations contained a limited selection of AI tools, such as text generation and web page summarization, this latest update brings forth a more comprehensive set of functionalities that Apple teased at its developer conference.

One of the standout features is Image Playground, which utilizes generative AI to create images based on user-defined text prompts. This feature is complemented by Genmoji, designed for generating customized emojis. Users can share these creations through various applications like Messages and Notes. Additionally, the Image Wand function allows users to convert rough sketches into corresponding images in the Notes app; however, access to Image Playground currently necessitates an early sign-up process after installing the update.

Another major enhancement is the integration of ChatGPT within Siri, which allows the voice assistant to deliver more informative and context-rich responses to user inquiries, as well as insights regarding images and documents. Users can request enhanced answers from ChatGPT through Siri directly, and those with a paid ChatGPT account can utilize more advanced OpenAI models through an optional sign-in.

For users of the iPhone 16 series, iOS 18.2 Developer Beta 1 offers a new feature named Visual Intelligence, likened to Google’s Lens capability. By pressing and holding the Camera Control button, users can access a new interface that enables them to gather information about objects captured by the camera, either through web searches or by querying ChatGPT.

In addition to the AI-centric features, the update introduces a revamped Email app that implements a user-friendly design paired with an on-device categorization system, which organizes emails into four distinct categories: Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions.

Moreover, Apple has broadened the reach of Apple Intelligence, making it available in various English-speaking regions, including:

  • English (Australia)
  • English (Canada)
  • English (New Zealand)
  • English (South Africa)
  • English (United Kingdom)
