Shoojit Sircar shares the emotional journey of casting Sardar Udham

Shoojit Sircar, the acclaimed director, recently disclosed that his renowned film, Sardar Udham, was originally intended to feature the late Irrfan Khan in the leading role. During a promotional event for his new film, I Want To Talk, Sircar opened up about the poignant backstory of Sardar Udham and how Irrfan’s encouragement helped shape the film, ultimately leading to the casting of Vicky Kaushal.

In an intimate discussion on Cyrus Says, Sircar reminisced about the emotional ups and downs of the project. He stated, “Irrfan was slated to play the role of Sardar Udham, but circumstances prevented it. There was a moment when I almost decided to take the film off my agenda. I consulted with Irrfan, and remarkably, he urged me to continue, saying, ‘Dada, please don’t. You must do this film; this is your baby.’ That conversation solidified my decision, leading to Vicky Kaushal stepping in. I do feel a profound sense of loss for Irrfan.”

Sircar expressed that his creative journey was profoundly influenced by Irrfan, considering him an integral part of his cinematic imagination. “Whenever I think of my projects, Irrfan is present in my thoughts. Vicky came quite close to fulfilling that vision, and he delivered an exemplary performance in Sardar Udham,” he remarked, noting how Vicky’s portrayal paid tribute to Irrfan’s artistic legacy.

Additionally, Sircar revealed that Irrfan was also envisioned for a lead role in his forthcoming film, I Want To Talk. However, Abhishek Bachchan ultimately took over the role, and Sircar expressed satisfaction with his performance. “It was meant to be Irrfan, but Abhishek’s interpretation came close to what I envisioned. I’m very pleased with his work,” he commented.

Reflecting on his deep-rooted friendship with Irrfan, Sircar articulated a sense of emptiness left by the actor’s departure, stating, “Irrfan was not just a colleague but a dear friend. His absence has created a significant void.” This bond extends to Irrfan’s family, particularly to his son, Babil Khan, who is participating in Sircar’s upcoming project, The Umesh Chronicles. “I have cast Babil in my film, and it is currently underway. He is part of our creative journey,” Sircar added.

Irrfan Khan, a globally admired actor recognized for his remarkable roles in films like The Lunchbox, Life of Pi, and Piku, succumbed to a neuroendocrine tumor in April 2020. His passing left an indelible mark on Indian cinema, prompting filmmakers like Shoojit Sircar to continue celebrating his legacy through their works.

Sardar Udham, a biographical portrayal of the Indian revolutionary Udham Singh, struck a chord with audiences due to its powerful depiction of patriotism and sacrifice. Although Irrfan could not embody the character, Vicky Kaushal’s poignant performance under Sircar’s direction served as a tribute to the vision that both the director and the late actor had for the story. The film stands as a significant milestone in Shoojit’s impressive filmography.
