Celebrating the Legacy of Amy Sherman-Palladino at PaleyFest 2025
This past weekend, PaleyFest 2025 concluded with a captivating panel discussion titled “Gilmore Girls, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Etoile: The Amy Sherman-Palladino Multiverse.” Attendees were treated to insights from the creative minds behind the beloved shows, as well as the chance to explore the prospects of further exploration in the Gilmore Girls universe.
After a successful original run on The WB and The CW, the Gilmore Girls narrative continued with the 2016 Netflix revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, helmed by Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Dan Palladino, alongside fan-favorite stars Lauren Graham (Lorelai), Alexis Bledel (Rory), and Kelly Bishop (Emily). With the saying “good things come in threes,” speculation about another chapter for the Gilmore franchise remains open.
“We never said ‘never’ because we didn’t actually intend to do the [revival] for Netflix,” Sherman-Palladino shared on the red carpet before the event. Reflecting on the revival’s origin, she recounted a spontaneous gathering with the cast after a previous panel where they all felt the chemistry and enthusiasm that led to the revival’s inception. “We all thought, ‘Well, this was fun! Let’s just do it again!’”
Sherman-Palladino expressed her deep affection for the characters and the setting, declaring, “I love Stars Hollow. I love Lauren Graham more than life. I love Alexis, and Kelly Bishop is my ‘Contessa.’ I bow to her.”
Praise for the potential continuation of Gilmore Girls also came from Graham and Bishop, both of whom were present at PaleyFest 2025. The Netflix revival concluded with Rory’s pregnancy announcement, a tantalizing cliffhanger that could easily serve as a launchpad for new stories. “I’ve never been shy to say I would welcome coming back,” Graham said, noting that the previous revival left many aspects of the story feeling incomplete. “It didn’t yet feel done, which is why the story ended in a way that was not done or could potentially [be a beginning].”
Bishop playfully suggested that Emily would take delight in the prospect of having a great-grandchild, revealing her character’s ambitions: “I think [Emily] would just look at that little baby and say, ‘What can I do with this one? I can really mold this one to be the way I want!’”
“That could be dangerous,” Palladino interjected, humorously acknowledging the fictional matriarch’s character traits.
As for Graham, she expressed her openness to the idea of embracing a grandmotherly role. Reflecting on her previous work on Parenthood, she quipped, “Somebody called me ‘Grandma’ at the end, and I was like, ‘Who’s that?’ It’s all right. What are you going to be? Not the grandma? Every age is just as good as the others.”
The positive atmosphere surrounding the tribute panel was further amplified by the surprise appearance of Alex Borstein, an Emmy-winner for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Sherman-Palladino commented on the significance of the moment, sharing, “I didn’t know she was going to. If nothing else, [tonight] is a chance for me to see my beloved friends.”
Bishop also highlighted the overdue recognition of Sherman-Palladino’s contributions to television storytelling, saying, “When I realized that tonight was going to happen, my first reaction was, ‘It’s about time!’ This woman has been creating such good work for so long. While she’s been recognized, she hasn’t been honored and that’s what’s happening now.”
As the event progressed, Sherman-Palladino humorously acknowledged the praise she received from the cast of her upcoming series, Étoile, set to premiere on Hulu on April 24. “We slipped them $100 before they got on the carpet. I don’t mind paying for love,” she joked, displaying her trademark wit.
