(Reuters) – A successful test on Tuesday night over Guam saw an SM-3 interceptor rocket launching into the sky, executing its mission to intercept and destroy a ballistic missile. This operation, monitored by the U.S. Missile Defense Agency and military personnel, demonstrated the capabilities of U.S. missile defense systems amid growing geopolitical tensions, particularly with China.
The ballistic missile, released from a U.S. Air Force C-17 aircraft, was neutralized by the SM-3’s kinetic impact at an altitude of over 600 kilometers (approximately 370 miles), marking a significant advancement in defense technology. This exercise was part of the United States’ extensive initiative to fortify Guam against potential threats, particularly from China, which is geographically closer to the territory than any U.S. state.
