[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for FBI Season 7 Episode 17 “Lineage.”]
In recent developments on FBI, the character Isobel, portrayed by Alana De La Garza, is firmly remaining within the team, much to the viewers’ delight.
This season took an unexpected turn when Isobel revealed to her colleague OA (Zeeko Zaki) that she had been married for several months. This episode introduced her husband, Phillip (Tom Cavanagh). As Isobel celebrates her 20th year with the FBI, retirement starts to loom in her mind, especially with the enticing prospect of full benefits. Yet, she soon realizes her mission is far from over, particularly with the daughter of a crime boss, long sought after, taking control of her family’s operations. Instead of stepping back, Isobel chooses to continue her pursuit, declaring a toast “to the chase.”
De La Garza reflects on the revelation of Isobel’s marriage and offers hints about what lies ahead for her character.
What a fantastic episode! It was refreshing to see Isobel in a joyful home setting.
Alana De La Garza: Thank you! I enjoyed it immensely; it was a fun experience to portray.
How did you feel when you learned that Isobel was married?
I was genuinely surprised to discover that Isobel had a rich personal life. As I read through the script, I found myself stopping in disbelief, thinking, “Wait… WHAT!??” [Laughs] It took a second read to fully grasp that moment.
In just a few scenes, we get an authentic glimpse into Isobel and Phillip’s relationship. What makes him the right partner for her?
Phillip embodies the tranquility that Isobel craves. For many, if they’re fortunate, family and marriage represent a sanctuary. Your partner becomes your closest ally, providing unwavering support. I believe that given the intense pressure Isobel faces, finding that sense of peace and security is indispensable for her.
What was it like to work with Tom Cavanagh?
Tom was absolutely wonderful to work with—so friendly and approachable, just as his public persona suggests.
Can we expect more developments in Isobel and Phillip’s relationship this season? What future explorations would you like to see?
Phillip will indeed be featured in future installments. With love comes vulnerability, and Isobel, as the Special Agent in Charge, feels that deeply. She carries the dual responsibility of ensuring public safety and guarding her own heart.
It’s engaging to see Isobel’s softer side, which Phillip brings to the forefront. This development adds intriguing layers to the story, raising the stakes significantly.

What insights do you have regarding Isobel and Phillip’s relationship backstory that we haven’t yet seen?
The pace at which everything unfolded left a lot of our backstory undefined. It’s still a work in progress, and I’m eager to see where it leads. I would love to meet Isobel’s children someday. [Laughs]
Isobel mentioned that her work consumed her before meeting Phillip. If it weren’t for her marriage, what might have prompted her to contemplate retirement?
Isobel is a true fighter; her tenacity is remarkable. I genuinely believe she would have never considered retirement until after forming a family with Phillip. Parenthood and personal connections shift one’s perspective, redefining what holds value in life and what brings fulfillment.
Jack was once the elusive figure Isobel never expected to catch; now his daughter has taken up that challenge. Can we look forward to more of that story arc this season?
I’m certain we haven’t seen the end of that storyline yet. It is compelling to delve into narratives that evolve throughout the season. The more we develop these central conflicts, the more impactful they become when the protagonists triumph. I always root for the good guys!
FBI airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on CBS.
