[Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for When Calls the Heart Season 12 Episode 12, “Must Be Gold.”]
The Season 12 finale of When Calls the Heart concludes with a significant cliffhanger as Elizabeth (played by Erin Krakow), Nathan (Kevin McGarry), Little Jack (Hyland Goodrich), and Allie (Jaeda Lily Miller) depart from Hope Valley. The duration of their absence remains uncertain, but this exit paves the way for a beloved character’s potential return in the When Calls the Heart storyline.
Throughout the episode, Elizabeth encounters a letter from Charlotte Thornton (Brooke Shields), the mother of Jack Thornton and grandmother to Little Jack. In this correspondence, Charlotte mentions her new role as a boarding house operator in Cape Fullerton and informs Elizabeth about a new insulin lab in the area. Elizabeth perceives the letter as an implication that she is jeopardizing her grandson’s health by failing to follow Charlotte’s guidance immediately.
In an attempt to soothe Elizabeth’s anxieties, Rosemary (Pascale Hutton) reassures her that Charlotte’s intention is merely to ensure that Little Jack receives optimal care for his diabetes. Despite her reservations about leaving Hope Valley, Elizabeth realizes she might need to act for Little Jack’s well-being.
Later in the episode, a distressing scenario unfolds when Elizabeth struggles to rouse Little Jack. It becomes evident that the week’s supply of insulin had not been correctly refrigerated, making it ineffective. Faith reveals that a new batch is en route from Toronto, prompting Elizabeth to recall the insulin lab in Cape Fullerton.
Elizabeth suggests they head to Cape Fullerton without delay, and Faith concurs that this may be the best course of action. “There’s nothing we can’t do for Little Jack here,” Faith reassures Elizabeth. However, the availability of resources at the lab becomes a decisive factor. The insulin lab has advanced testing that could have caught Little Jack’s complications earlier.
Faith emphasizes, “For now, it may be best for you to be closer to this lab if you can,” and Elizabeth recognizes the urgency of their departure to secure Little Jack’s health. When Little Jack inquires about their stay in Cape Fullerton, Elizabeth responds, “We’ll see. At least for some time.”
In the episode’s concluding scenes, Elizabeth and Little Jack leave under the cover of darkness for Cape Fullerton, with Nathan and Allie soon joining them, solidifying their familial bond. Nathan expresses his commitment, saying, “Where you go, I go.”
With the family heading to Cape Fullerton, Charlotte’s return appears likely in the already confirmed Season 13. Charlotte’s letter serves as a substantial clue toward her imminent comeback. Since her last appearance in Season 3, fans have awaited her return for ten long seasons. While neither Shields nor Hallmark has formally verified her return, the finale of Season 12 lays a promising foundation for Charlotte’s re-introduction.
