[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Colin From Accounts, Season 2.]
Season 2 of Colin From Accounts has officially launched on Paramount+, and as audiences dive into the new episodes, questions arise about the future of Gordon and Ashley, the central couple portrayed by real-life partners and co-creators Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer.
While the first season detailed the origins of their relationship, the second season delves into the complexities that arise as they explore each other’s backgrounds. Viewers may recall that Gordon and Ashley’s unusual meeting came when Ashley, a medical student, inadvertently caused Gordon, a microbrewery owner, to injure the show’s titular dog, Colin.
Season 2 reaffirms the unconventional bond between Ashley and Gordon, featuring a mix of humor and emotional depth. In a recent conversation, Brammall and Dyer discussed the season’s cliffhanger finale and the potential implications for a third season, alongside insights into the comedic elements that shaped some of its most memorable moments.
Cliffhanger: A Tease for Season 3?
After consuming the hilarious episodes of Season 2, viewers are left pondering the state of Gordon and Ashley’s relationship after the climactic cliffhanger. The finale revolves around Ashley’s friend Megan’s wedding, during which Gordon finally professes his love for Ashley, who has expressed her feelings throughout the season.
Following a chat with Ashley’s ex, James, Gordon is inspired to propose in an impromptu manner during the wedding reception. Ashley, however, requests they discuss it later, leaving the moment in a state of awkwardness as they dance. This unresolved tension set the stage for the season’s conclusion.
“It was a bit cheeky on our part,” Dyer shared, suggesting that they deliberately left viewers hanging. Brammall echoed her sentiment, hinting at the possibility of further exploration in a third season.
While a third season has not yet been officially confirmed, Dyer remains optimistic about the show’s continuation. “We haven’t had any indications to compact the story, allowing for a potential follow-up,” she noted.
“We aim to evoke a mix of reactions—curiosity and a bit of frustration,” Dyer articulated, wanting the audience to grapple with the characters’ choices. “We wanted them to wonder, ‘What just happened? Why did it end like that?’”
In discussing the finale, Brammall revealed how the original edit left viewers with an even more ambiguous conclusion. Aiming to give the storyline a more uplifting tone, they revised it to enhance the characters’ awkward interactions instead of leaving them in irreparable conflict.
The Mystery of Ashley’s Father
Interestingly, Ashley’s father has not yet featured in the series, having only been referenced through text messages in Season 1. As the second season expanded on Ashley and Gordon’s relationship through their families, fans began to wonder if Ashley’s dad would ever make an appearance. “We should definitely include him in Season 3,” joked Dyer.
Brammall acknowledged the oversight, hinting that the character could bring an intriguing dynamic to future episodes. For now, Season 2 provides a deeper glimpse into Ashley’s mother and Gordon’s relatives, showcasing various family interactions.
“The characters they embody may not be exact replicas of people we know, but they’re inspired by real-life experiences,” Dyer explained. The portrayal of Gordon’s family, for instance, illustrates traditional Australian dynamics, with humorous commentary on the patriarchal roles often seen during gatherings.
“We highlighted Gordon’s struggles with his father, demonstrating how familial expectations can hinder personal growth,” Brammall said, revealing how this influence shapes Gordon’s behavior and relationship with Ashley.
Recurring Themes of Comedy and Chaos
In an intriguing parallel to the first season, Season 2 also opens with a dramatic incident—this time involving a runner colliding with Gordon, Ashley, and Colin’s family. Dyer noted that although the moment intentionally maintains a humorous tone, it was not scripted to replicate the original dog accident.
Originally, the creatives had considered a more macabre opening involving a body falling from a coffin, but this was ultimately discarded in favor of a more comedic approach that aligns with the series’ style.
The Real Town of Yass
For those unaware, Yass is indeed a real town in Australia. While production didn’t take place there, the name resonated with Dyer and Brammall as a fitting backdrop for Gordon’s family. “It captures the essence of a small town one longs to escape,” Dyer explained, noting its newfound fame partially due to pop culture references and social media.
As fans await updates on the future of Gordon and Ashley’s relationship as well as a potential return to Yass, they can enjoy both seasons of Colin From Accounts on Paramount+
