Meta Platforms is set to implement facial recognition technology to assist users in recovering their hacked accounts. This initiative aims to streamline the account recovery process, particularly as concerns around account security continue to grow.
Recent reports indicate that users have been facing difficulties accessing various Meta social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and Messenger. The outage tracking service Downdetector has noted a surge in outage reports from different regions across the United States, starting from around 1 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday.
Users experiencing problems include both Facebook and Instagram users who reported challenges accessing the mobile app and website. Additionally, Messenger users noted complications with login and message sending capabilities. A spokesperson for Meta acknowledged the issue, stating, “We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and apologize for any inconvenience.”
While Meta has not detailed the specific cause of the ongoing technical difficulties or provided a timeline for resolution, reports from Downdetector indicate that tens of thousands of users have been affected. By 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time, approximately 90,000 users had reported issues on Facebook alone. Some users noted that they could access Facebook but were unable to post or interact with other users’ content.
Cisco ThousandEyes, a network intelligence company, posted on X, stating: “Meta services, including Facebook and Instagram, are currently experiencing an outage that began at approximately 17:55 UTC and is still ongoing. ThousandEyes is detecting internal server errors and timeouts, which may indicate issues with Meta’s backend services. Network connectivity to Meta’s frontend web servers remains unaffected.”
Meta’s app users continued to face access problems well into the afternoon, with WhatsApp users also reporting difficulties in sending messages. This issue appears to extend beyond the U.S., affecting users in countries like Argentina and Brazil, where WhatsApp is widely used for calls.
This recent outage follows a series of similar incidents in March, when over half a million users reported access problems, including being logged out of their accounts without a chance to log back in. On that occasion, Meta attributed the disruptions to an unspecified “technical issue.”
