Taapsee Pannu Discusses Collaboration and Character Evolution in Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba

Taapsee Pannu reflects on her character’s ideological challenges and her relationship with screenwriter Kanika Dhillon.

In a much-anticipated follow-up to Haseen Dillruba, Taapsee Pannu reunites with Vikrant Massey in Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, joined by Sunny Kaushal. Sunny shared insights during a recent interview about his camaraderie with Taapsee, recalling a time when she jokingly invited him to her housewarming party as the companion of her then-partner, Vicky Kaushal, while filming Manmarziyaan. Speaking exclusively to News18 Showsha, Taapsee expressed her excitement about working alongside him for the first time.

She humorously recounted how Sunny “bullied” her during production, stating, “It seems like I’ve done something right for him to be invited back for Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba. There are rare occasions where I am nice to him, and he should really embrace that. I did invite him personally to my housewarming, albeit not as Vicky’s plus-one!”

Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba marks Taapsee’s fifth collaboration with writer Kanika Dhillon, following their previous works that included Manmarziyaan and Rashmi Rocket. Discussing their growing synergy, Taapsee noted, “Our friendship has only become more audacious with each project. It started with Manmarziyaan, where Kanika pushed me out of my comfort zone, making me portray a character that contradicted my beliefs. I never envisioned embodying such a role so authentically.”

Taapsee praised Kanika’s distinctive storytelling, highlighting her ability to create complex female characters who defy traditional norms. “She has this remarkable knack for writing women who are resilient and self-aware. With the characters like those in Haseen Dillruba, they personify accountability and face the repercussions of their actions without romanticizing their flaws. This depth makes them relatable and powerful,” she elaborated.

Elaborating on Kanika’s approach, Taapsee remarked, “Her protagonists are beautifully imperfect and transparent about their vulnerabilities. They don’t don a cloak of heroism to cover up their mistakes. There’s something truly beautiful about the way Kanika crafts these authentic characters. Our dynamic as writer and actor profoundly enhances our creative expression.”

As for the possibility of continuing the Haseen Dillruba saga, Taapsee suggested, “I might not delve into literature as much as Vikrant and Sunny do, but I plan to propose the novel Malice to Kanika for a potential third installment. I hope Hasseen Dillruba becomes a recurring presence in our work, and there will undoubtedly be more collaborations between us in the future.”

Similar to its predecessor, Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba delves into profound love themes and is set to premiere on Netflix on August 9.
