Kim Soo Hyun Under Fire Amid Controversy Surrounding Kim Sae Ron’s Death
The passing of actress Kim Sae Ron has led to significant public backlash against fellow actor Kim Soo Hyun, following allegations regarding a previous relationship that purportedly occurred when she was still a minor.
Kim Soo Hyun, renowned for his role in “Queen of Tears,” is currently embroiled in controversy after claims surfaced from Kim Sae Ron’s family asserting that the two were romantically involved when she was underage. This controversy has ignited widespread reactions online, prompting some to call for Kim Soo Hyun’s removal from the entertainment industry.
Legal experts have weighed in on the matter, providing clarity regarding South Korea’s legal framework. Following amendments made in May 2020, the law stipulates that any sexual activity with a minor under the age of 16—even consensual—constitutes statutory rape. However, Attorney Lee Go Eun clarified to YTN that Kim Sae Ron was 15 in 2015, which means the previously applicable law, which set the minor age at under 13, should be considered.
According to Lee, a mere relationship would not be adequate for prosecution; establishing criminal liability would require solid evidence of sexual acts occurring.
The controversy further escalated when the YouTube channel HoverLab alleged that the romantic involvement began in 2015, during which Kim Soo Hyun was 27 and Kim Sae Ron was 15. Initially, Kim Soo Hyun’s agency, Gold Medalist, refuted these claims. However, after HoverLab shared undisclosed photographs of the two, the agency acknowledged that a relationship did take place but claimed it initiated in 2019, after Kim Sae Ron reached the age of 19.
Kim Sae Ron tragically died by suicide on February 16 at her residence in Seoul. Her family reported that financial woes and alleged debts, including claims of owing around $483,000 to Kim Soo Hyun, significantly contributed to her emotional distress.
Kim Soo Hyun stands as one of South Korea’s highest-paid actors, gaining acclaim through hit dramas such as “My Love From The Star,” “Moon Embracing The Sun,” “The Producers,” and “It’s Okay To Not Be Okay.” As the investigation and public scrutiny regarding the timeline of his relationship with Kim Sae Ron continues to unfold, the ramifications for both individuals involved remain a topic of significant discussion.
