BroadwayWorld has reported that the acclaimed musical Evita is set to grace the London Palladium this summer, with discussions underway for Ariana DeBose to take on the lead role. Following its run in the West End, there’s a possibility that the production could make its way to Broadway as well. Investors involved in this new venture are also being given the chance to secure early investment opportunities for any future Broadway productions.
This news follows the recent successful transfer of another Jamie Lloyd revival of an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Sunset Boulevard, which starred Nicole Scherzinger and made its Broadway debut in 2024 after a West End run in 2023.
Evita, which has not been seen on New York stages since a production at New York City Center in November 2019 featuring Solea Pfeiffer, had a notable cast that included Maia Reffico as Young Eva, Jason Gotay as Che Guevara, and Enrique Acevedo as Juan Perón. The musical last appeared on Broadway in 2012 with Elena Roger, Ricky Martin, and Michael Cerveris in leading roles.
The upcoming production of Evita, created by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, is scheduled to run at The London Palladium from June 14 to September 6, 2025. Jamie Lloyd, who originally directed the show at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre during their 2019 season, will be at the helm of this new production.
This new staging is produced by Michael Harrison in collaboration with Lloyd Webber Harrison Musicals and The Jamie Lloyd Company, under the arrangement with The Really Useful Group Ltd.
About Evita
Evita is a musical with a score by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics penned by Tim Rice, telling the story of Eva Perón, an Argentine political figure, activist, and actress, who was the second wife of President Juan Perón. The narrative explores her early life, ascent to power, philanthropic efforts, and eventual death.
This iconic musical began its journey as a rock opera concept album released in 1976, which led to a West End debut in 1978. It received critical acclaim, winning the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical that same year. A year later, it made its way to Broadway, where it became the first British musical to win the Tony Award for Best Musical at the 34th Tony Awards.
Over the years, many renowned performers have taken on the role of Eva Perón, including Elaine Paige, Patti LuPone, Nancy Opel, Elena Roger, and Caroline Bowman. Recently, a West End concert version of Evita was staged at Theatre Royal Drury Lane in July and August 2023, featuring Auli’i Cravalho. Additionally, a film adaptation of the musical was released in 1996, with Madonna portraying the lead character.
