World Premiere of Regency Girls Set for The Old Globe

The Old Globe has unveiled the casting and creative team for the pre-Broadway run of its world premiere musical, Regency Girls. This exciting and audacious new musical comedy boasts a book crafted by Emmy-winning authors Jennifer Crittenden and Gabrielle Allan. The musical score is composed by the three-time Emmy nominee Curtis Moore, while the lyrics come from two-time Tony and Grammy nominee Amanda Green.

At the helm of this production is Josh Rhodes, known for his work on Broadway’s Spamalot and The Old Globe’s Cabaret, who will direct and choreograph this lively tale centered around themes of love, rebellion, personal autonomy, and self-discovery. Regency Girls is being produced in association with Aged in Wood Productions and HudsonMann. The performances are slated to start on April 2 and will continue through May 4, 2025, with the official opening night scheduled for Thursday, April 10. This limited run will take place on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage at The Old Globe Theatre within the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Tickets will be available for purchase starting Friday, February 21, at 12 p.m. PST through TheOldGlobe.org.

The narrative of Regency Girls follows Elinor Benton, a young woman in 19th-century England who faces a challenging dilemma—she finds herself pregnant, without a husband. With societal norms stacked against her, she joins forces with her closest friends to embark on a transformative journey to seek the counsel of a woman who might better her prospects. This road trip is filled with both humorous and poignant moments as the characters confront their futures and the choices before them.

Barry Edelstein, the Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director, expressed enthusiasm about the production, stating, “The Globe’s season continues with a real marvel. Regency Girls is a totally original, world-premiere musical that’s utterly delightful, funny as all get-out, and about some very big and timely themes. Its creators are at the tops of their games: amazingly gifted storytellers from film, TV, and theatre, and their talents combine to make something spectacular. Director-choreographer Josh Rhodes, a dear friend of The Old Globe, has gathered a cast of powerhouse American musical theatre talent, and I can’t wait to share what they make with audiences at the Globe, and, I’m sure, beyond.”

Rhodes will lead a talented ensemble cast of 20 performers, including Isabelle McCalla portraying Elinor, Krystina Alabado as Dabney, Kate Rockwell as Jane, and Ryann Redmond as Petunia. Other cast members include Nik Walker as Stanton, Gabe Gibbs as Dingley / Galloping Dick, Janine LaManna as Lady Catherine / Madame Restell, and many more, including understudies across various roles to ensure a robust theatrical experience.

The creative effort behind Regency Girls is further enhanced by a talented team. Alongside the primary writers and composers, the production features orchestrations by Curtis Moore and James Sampliner, with music supervision also by Sampliner. The scenic design is crafted by Anna Louizos, costume design by David Israel Reynoso, and lighting design by Adam Honoré. Sound design is managed by Jason Crystal, while music direction is by Patrick Sulken. Additionally, fight direction is provided by Jake Millgard, and the production includes expertise from various associate directors, choreographers, and casting professionals, ensuring a well-rounded and polished performance.
