Israeli Forces Launch Major Offensive in the West Bank as Trump Lifts Sanctions on Settlers

A recent military operation by Israeli forces in a densely populated refugee camp in the occupied West Bank resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals, according to reports from Palestinian health officials. This incident occurs as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have declared the start of a significant offensive in this area, coinciding with a ceasefire currently holding in the smaller Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian Health Ministry, acting in the West Bank—a region that has been under Israeli military occupation for several decades and is not controlled by Hamas—reported the fatalities associated with this operation.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement from his office, indicated that both IDF and police units have initiated a large-scale military operation aimed at “eradicating terrorism in Jenin.”

This operation, termed “Iron Wall” by Netanyahu, is part of what he describes as a systematic effort to enhance security within the West Bank while addressing Iranian influence in the region. He emphasized the importance of acting with determination against any threats posed by Iranian-supported groups.

For over 15 months, amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, Jenin has been spotlighted due to repeated Israeli incursions into the territory. The Palestinian Authority, responsible for parts of the West Bank, conducted its own operations in the area late last year, reflecting the complex security dynamics at play.

The conflict’s escalation has led to a significant rise in violence across the West Bank, with the Israeli government asserting that their military actions are focused on combating Iranian-backed militants. Since the onset of the conflict following Hamas’ attacks on October 7, 2023, the Palestinian Health Ministry reports that over 800 individuals have lost their lives due to Israeli raids in the West Bank. In turn, several Israelis have also been killed in recent Palestinian attacks.

In a related development, the IDF’s new offensive was launched shortly after former President Trump nullified a number of Biden-era executive orders. These orders had imposed sanctions on individuals undermining peace initiatives in the occupied West Bank, predominantly targeting extremist Israeli settlers.

The sanctions implemented by the Biden administration previously aimed to curb violence against Palestinians, particularly by extremist settlement groups in the West Bank. International law categorizes Israeli settlements and outposts in the region as illegal. Last summer, the International Court of Justice reaffirmed this stance, declaring that Israel should cease its settlement activities and end the occupation—a ruling that Israeli authorities dismissed as non-binding.

With expectations set for a more sympathetic approach towards settlements under a potential Trump administration, settlers have expressed optimism. During his presidency, Trump took controversial measures that favored Israeli territorial claims, including the acknowledgment of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and the relocation of the U.S. Embassy there, as well as recognizing the annexation of the Golan Heights.

Post-election in November, one of Israel’s far-right leaders indicated ambitions for annexing the occupied West Bank in the year 2025. Bezalel Smotrich, a prominent member of the Religious Zionist Party, expressed confidence in collaborating with Trump’s anticipated administration to forward the cause of annexation, underscoring a commitment to the ideological belief that all of historical Palestine belongs to the Jewish people.

The proliferation of Israeli settlements in the West Bank is widely seen as an obstacle to achieving a viable two-state solution, the long-standing U.S.-endorsed framework proposing the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. The growing Israeli population in these territories raises critical questions about the feasibility of relinquishing control for the sake of peace.
