Priya Bhavani Shankar addresses the backlash following Indian 2’s reviews

Priya Bhavani Shankar, a prominent figure in the Southern film industry, has attracted attention not only for her talent but also for her recent stand against online trolling. Active in both the Tamil and Telugu film sectors, she continuously delivers strong performances. However, despite her achievements, Bhavani Shankar has encountered negativity, especially after the disappointing reception of her latest film, Kamal Hassan’s Indian 2.

In a recent interview with Galatta, she revealed the personal toll the negative reviews have taken on her, leading to incidents of cyber-bullying. She expressed her frustration about being singled out and blamed for the film’s lackluster performance, emphasizing that it is unjust to hold one individual accountable for a film’s outcome.

Reflecting on her involvement in Indian 2, Shankar expressed that the opportunity was significant for her career as it was her first major project, paving the way for future roles. She noted that often, filmmakers seek actresses who have participated in high-profile films, claiming it enhances their marketability. “It’s part of the industry dynamics, and I accept that,” she stated, reiterating the shared disappointment felt by the entire cast and crew when a film does not succeed.

Bhavani Shankar asserted that even if she anticipated Indian 2 would underperform, she would still have chosen to take on the role, highlighting the rarity of an actress rejecting a project of this magnitude with established directors and actors. While she expressed no regrets about her work on the film, she did convey her sentiments towards the audience, stating, “I apologize to those who expected more from us.”

Furthermore, she countered the notion that a film’s success rests solely on one person, citing industry stalwarts like Thalapathy Vijay and Rajinikanth. Shankar pointed out that if individual stars were the sole determinants of a film’s success, then all of their films would be guaranteed hits—an assertion that does not reflect reality. Instead, she emphasized the importance of collaboration and teamwork in the filmmaking process.

Noted for her performances in successful films such as Meyadha Maan and Thiruchitrambalam, Bhavani Shankar is now focused on her next project, Demonte Colony 2, set to release on August 15. As she navigates the complexities of fame and scrutiny, her insights contribute to a broader conversation about the film industry’s dynamics and the pressures faced by actors.
