Kiplimo Makes History with Record-Breaking Half Marathon
In a remarkable display of endurance and speed, Jacob Kiplimo redefined the limits of long-distance racing at the eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona on Sunday. The Ugandan athlete clocked an astounding time of 56 minutes and 42 seconds, marking his place in history as the first runner ever to complete a half marathon in under 57 minutes.
This groundbreaking performance eclipsed the previous record of 57:30, set by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha just last year in Valencia. Kiplimo’s achievement reflects an unprecedented improvement in the half marathon world record, showcasing his exceptional talent and preparation.
During the race, the 24-year-old also claimed the world best time for 15 kilometers, finishing that segment in 40:07. Kiplimo’s dominance was evident as he crossed the finish line over two minutes ahead of his nearest competitor, Geoffrey Kamworor.
“I am very excited about what I did today,” Kiplimo expressed after his historic win. “I wanted to have a great race, but I didn’t expect to break the world record!”
From the onset of the race, Kiplimo established a commanding lead. By the time he reached the 5-kilometer mark in 13:34, he was already pacing nearly 20 seconds faster than the required speed to break the record. He maintained this momentum, passing the 10-kilometer checkpoint at 26:46, and further extending his lead as he approached the closing kilometers.
Upon reaching the 20-kilometer mark in 53:42, Kiplimo completed another 10-kilometer segment in an impressive 26:46, reinforcing his stronghold on the race and enabling him to secure a decisive victory.
Reflecting on the race, Kiplimo stated, “It has been the perfect race. Ideal temperature, no wind at all, fantastic circuit – everything went better than expected.” He noted that while the pacemaker had set a target pace of 2:45 per kilometer, he felt an abundance of energy and chose to increase his speed from the third kilometer onward, leading to an unexpected yet stellar performance.
Following this monumental win, Kiplimo revealed that he will be taking a break from competition until the TCS London Marathon on April 27, where he is expected to make his debut against an elite field that includes the legendary four-time champion Eliud Kipchoge.
