As Jewel Thief gears up for release, Jaideep Ahlawat reflects on a heartfelt compliment—being seen as a worthy successor to the late Irrfan Khan.

Jaideep Ahlawat shares his thoughts on comparisons with Irrfan Khan: “It’s an honor… I have to stay on my toes and thoroughly explore my craft, not only acting.”

As anticipation builds for the release of his new heist thriller, Jewel Thief, Jaideep Ahlawat finds himself contemplating a significant compliment—being regarded by audiences as a potential heir to the influential legacy of the late Irrfan Khan.

In an interview with India Today, Ahlawat candidly discussed the comparisons drawn between his work and that of the esteemed actor. Clearly moved, he acknowledged the unexpected nature of such praise. “It’s a deeply personal feeling,” he remarked. “There’s an overwhelming sense of responsibility that accompanies it—almost in a surreal manner.”

He elaborated, “It’s humbling to realize that someone connects with your artistry on such a profound level. That kind of recognition transforms into a responsibility, motivating me to remain vigilant and to delve deeper into the craft—not only of acting, but the broad spectrum of filmmaking.”

Ahlawat highlighted that his dedication to experimentation serves a greater purpose beyond personal enrichment; it also aims to inspire his viewers. “If I don’t challenge the art form, then the audience won’t explore it either,” he suggested.

When queried about his interest in a particular genre, Ahlawat dismissed the notion of being confined to specific categories. “Genres seem quite limiting at this point. I have countless stories I wish to tell. Perhaps in a decade, I will have a clearer answer. For now, the possibilities are endless,” he stated.

Irrfan Khan, the actor Ahlawat is often compared to, left an indelible mark on Indian cinema with memorable roles in films like The Lunchbox, Paan Singh Tomar, Madaari, Life of Pi, and Billu. His tragic demise in 2020 at the age of 53 due to a colon infection created a significant void in the industry that remains palpable.

On the career front, Jaideep Ahlawat is poised to make a notable impact with Jewel Thief, a high-energy Netflix original feature alongside Saif Ali Khan, Kunal Kapoor, and Nikita Dutta. The film has generated excitement not just for its thrilling premise, but also for Ahlawat’s surprising dance performance in the hit song Jaadu, which has captivated both fans and critics.

Jewel Thief, directed by Robbie Grewal and Kookie Gulati, and produced by Siddharth Anand and Mamta Anand under Marflix Productions, is set to premiere on Netflix on April 28, 2025.
