Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC) has revealed plans for its 2025 annual Spring Gala, set to take place on Monday, May 19, at Cipriani 42nd Street. The event will honor Academy Award and Tony Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal, who is currently performing in Othello on Broadway. Gyllenhaal has a history with MTC, having co-starred in their acclaimed 2015 production of Nick Payne’s Constellations and serving on their Board of Directors from 2015 to 2023. He has also been a vigorous advocate for the organization’s student outreach initiatives.
The Gala will be hosted by renowned three-time Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters and will also recognize Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC). The evening will commence with cocktails at 7:00 PM, followed by dinner and a performance lineup featuring acts from productions such as Dead Outlaw, Maybe Happy Ending, Operation Mincemeat, Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends, and Sunset Boulevard, among others. Proceeds from this lavish event will support MTC in its mission to produce high-quality new works for the stage, including this season’s offerings like Eureka Day, Bad Kreyòl, The Hills of California, Vladimir, Dakar 2000, We Had a World, as well as Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends. Additionally, funds will bolster MTC’s Artistic Development and Learning and Community Engagement programs, aimed at bringing the transformative power of live theatre to audiences of all ages.
MTC Spring Gala co-chairs include Marie T. Gallagher, Hirofumi Otsuka, Thomas F. Secunda, and Nigel Smith. The Host Committee features notable figures such as Opal H. Bennett, Mary Ann and Vincent Q. Giffuni, Joanna Gleason, Andy Hartman, Jessica Hecht, Laurie B. and David C. Hodgson, Clyde B. Jones III, Lea Salonga, along with Laura Weil and EJ Camp.
The evening will be musically directed by Tony Award winner Jason Michael Webb, with sound and lighting design from Tony Award winners Leon Rothenberg and Joel Shier, respectively. Stage management will be handled by James FitzSimmons and Jereme Kyle Lewis.
Individual tickets for the MTC Spring Gala, which include cocktails, dinner, and the show, are available at prices of $6,000, $4,000, and $3,000. Additionally, tables accommodating ten guests are offered at $60,000, $40,000, and $30,000. Jake Gyllenhaal, a nominee for both Academy and Tony Awards, brings a wealth of experience, having starred in over 40 films and numerous theatrical productions. He currently dazzles audiences on Broadway in William Shakespeare’s Othello alongside Denzel Washington. The production recently set box office records, grossing $2.8 million during its preview week and surpassing $3 million in its first full week post-opening. Gyllenhaal’s take on the character Iago has received accolades for its fresh intensity, reinforcing his reputation as a dynamic and fearless performer. After his breakout role in Donnie Darko (2001), he garnered Oscar and SAG nominations and a BAFTA win for his performance in Brokeback Mountain (2005), solidifying his status as a versatile actor. Other significant film roles include Nightcrawler (2014), which earned him further nominations for Lead Actor, as well as Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) and Road House (2024), where he will reprise his role in an upcoming sequel. Gyllenhaal also made his series debut and served as an executive producer for AppleTV+’s “Presumed Innocent,” which has become one of the platform’s most-watched dramas and has been renewed for a second season. For the stage, his performances span various productions, including Kenneth Lonergan’s This is Our Youth on London’s West End, where he received the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Outstanding Newcomer; along with acclaimed works like Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, Nick Payne’s Constellations, and Sea Wall/A Life, earning a Tony nomination for Best Actor. Currently, he is in a three-year first-look film partnership with Amazon MGM, producing plays and films through his company, Nine Stories, including Broadway’s Sea Wall/A Life and Jeremy O. Harris’s Slave Play, both of which collectively received 12 Tony nominations at the 2021 Tony Awards.

Winter Garden Theatre (Broadway)
A decade after its closure, Mamma Mia! is set to return to Broadway this summer. Featuring beloved music by ABBA, the musical will start previews on August 2, with its official opening night slated for August 14. The production will take place at the Winter Garden Theater, its original Broadway home, where it initially opened in 2001. The show enjoyed a legendary run of 14 years, performing 5,773 times, making it one of Broadway’s longest-running productions in history.
