Jamal Lewis Questions Ravens’ Play Calling After Playoff Loss
In an intense analysis of the Baltimore Ravens’ recent playoff defeat, former player Jamal Lewis placed the blame squarely on the coaching staff’s decision-making rather than on any specific player, particularly not on Mark Andrews, who was involved in a critical two-point conversion attempt that failed.
Speaking with TMZ Sports a day after the Ravens’ close exit from the Divisional Round against the Buffalo Bills, Lewis expressed his discontent over the choice of play that determined the outcome of the game.
The failed two-point conversion was a pivotal moment that many observers will remember with disappointment. Lewis criticized the decision to call for a sprint-out pass to Andrews rather than utilizing the team’s formidable running back, Derrick Henry. “Why wouldn’t you just hand the ball to your 250-, 260-pound running back?” he questioned, emphasizing that it seemed counterintuitive not to use such a powerful asset in that crucial situation.
After Andrews was unable to complete a pass thrown by quarterback Lamar Jackson, the Ravens could not secure the subsequent onside kick, allowing Buffalo to run out the remaining clock. “If Henry gets the ball, or if they just relied on a designed run for Jackson, the game could have turned out differently,” Lewis lamented.
Lewis firmly believes that opting for a running play rather than a risky pass would have been the better strategy. “At least run it,” he urged. “Don’t put it in the air. You know what I mean?”
The former Ravens tailback also voiced regret over the team’s earlier decision to go for a two-point conversion rather than opting for the safer extra point following a touchdown in the game. He felt that this was another miscalculation that ultimately cost them valuable points when the game was still tightly contested.
Despite the disappointment with the game’s outcome and some of the decisions made throughout, Lewis remains hopeful for the future of Jackson and the Ravens. He emphasized the importance of maintaining health for the team as they look to improve in the following season.
