James Carville: Democrats Will Align with Gavin Newsom on Trans Athlete Issues

Political Shifts on Transgender Athletes in Women’s Sports

Democratic strategist James Carville suggests that more voices within the party will begin to echo California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent stance against transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.

Recently, Governor Newsom garnered substantial attention for his remarks on this contentious issue during a podcast with Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA. He described biological males participating in women’s sports as “deeply unfair.”

“I believe that’s a perspective shared by many Americans,” Carville stated in a discussion with Fox News Digital.

“While I personally do not follow the state track meet closely, I trust athletic administrators can manage this issue,” he noted. “To me, it’s not a significant concern, and the Democratic Party has been facing backlash for taking a stance they weren’t fully prepared to address.”

Examining the Democratic Stance on Sports and Gender

In response to growing criticisms, Carville expressed that Democrats are facing considerable backlash due to their position supporting the inclusion of biological men in women’s sports. A January poll from The New York Times revealed significant public dissent, with nearly 80% of Americans opposing this viewpoint, including 67% of Democrats. This suggests a growing disconnect between party leadership and public opinion.

Carville emphasized the need for a reassessment of the party’s approach to this topic, indicating that Democratic leaders must be willing to change their narrative to align with voter sentiment.

Strategies for Public Acceptance

“If this issue is truly that important, then it’s crucial to persuade the public,” Carville advised. “Current messaging suggests that being supportive of this agenda is an act of courage. Instead, they should focus on shaping public opinion to secure electoral victories, as present sentiments lean against it.” He articulated that pressing forward on this front without public support could inadvertently bolster opposition forces.

“More Democrats may begin to adopt this perspective,” he added, referencing remarks by notable figures like Newsom and Massachusetts Representative Seth Moulton.

Despite the prevailing public opinion against transgender athletes in women’s sports, Democrats voted to block a proposal aimed at banning such participation. Carville, however, does not view this opposition to the bill as a misstep.

Delegate to Athletic Associations

“This should be a matter for athletic associations to handle,” Carville mentioned. He referenced Utah Governor Spencer Cox’s decision to veto an anti-trans sports bill, highlighting that, based on participation rates, the issue may not warrant legislative action. “Out of 100,000 high school athletes in Utah, for example, only four are transgender. This isn’t a significant legislative concern,” he said.

“I used to actively participate in track and field, and the topic rarely crosses my mind. I don’t see the need for legislative intervention here. It’s a concern more suited for governing bodies within the sports community,” he concluded, advocating for their autonomy in determining eligibility criteria.
