Political Strategist Urges Democrats to Avoid Interference Amid Trump Protests
Veteran political strategist James Carville has advised Democratic leaders to refrain from obstructing the current wave of protests rising against President Donald Trump and his billionaire supporter, Elon Musk.
In an appearance on MSNBC with Ari Melber, Carville suggested a strategy of passive observation, urging Democrats to “play possum.” He emphasized the importance of not intervening in what he believes is an organic movement. “Just let it go. Don’t get in the way of it. Or as we like to say, ‘Don’t just stand there. Do nothing,’” he stated, highlighting the need to allow the movement to develop without interference.
Describing the protests as a freight train gaining momentum, Carville foresees a time when democrat resistance may be called for. He cited the “immortal words of Dalton” from the film ‘Road House’, encouraging a temporary posture of restraint: “be nice until it’s time not to be nice.”
Carville also addressed the perspectives of moderates who suggest that reactions to Trump’s actions might be exaggerated. “No one is overreacting,” he insisted. “We’re living in real time in a catastrophe.” He expressed confidence that public sentiment will soon shift against Trump, predicting that the change will occur “way sooner than you think.”
Looking forward to significant upcoming events, Carville pointed to the Virginia elections on November 5 as a potential turning point. This election will replace the outgoing Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin, who has maintained a close affiliation with Trump.
He highlighted the significant demographic of federal employees in Northern Virginia, suggesting their turnout could greatly impact the election outcome. “What percent of the voters in northern Virginia are federal employees or families of federal employees? Do you think they’re gonna vote? I think they’re gonna vote. I think I know which way they’re gonna vote, and they’re gonna vote heavily,” Carville asserted.
His comments come against a backdrop of budget cuts and layoffs affecting federal workers, indicative of Trump and Musk’s policies. Carville’s insights reflect a strategic approach for Democrats, urging patience while the grassroots sentiment against Trump continues to evolve.
