James Gunn’s Superman Film to Feature Krypto, Inspired by His Own Dog

Krypto, the beloved Superdog from the DC Comics universe, is set for his live-action debut in the forthcoming Superman film directed by James Gunn. This portrayal marks a significant milestone for the character, who has yet to appear on the big screen. The inspiration for Krypto comes from a very personal source—Gunn’s own rescue dog, Ozu, whom he adopted shortly after beginning work on the screenplay for Superman. In a poignant social media post, Gunn shared the connection, stating, “Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman.” The eagerly anticipated film is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.

Gunn elaborated on Ozu’s challenging past, mentioning that the dog came from a hoarding situation where he lived in a backyard with around 60 other dogs and had little to no interaction with humans. “Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic, to say the least,” he recounted in his post.

Describing Ozu’s turbulent adjustment to his new environment, Gunn shared, “He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture — he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him.” This behavior sparked a creative idea for Gunn: “Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?” This thought helped incorporate Krypto into the film’s narrative, influencing the overall storyline significantly.

“And thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life,” Gunn explained. He also noted the coincidental timing of Krypto’s debut with Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, adding, “What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than Adopt A Shelter Dog month? By the way, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy.”

A glimpse of Krypto in the upcoming film shows David Corenswet’s Superman sitting with him on the moon, looking down at Earth, which hints at an emotional connection between the characters.

Krypto made his first appearance in comics back in 1955 in Adventure Comics #210 and has since been featured in several animated series and films. However, this Superman movie will mark his live-action debut. The character previously starred in the animated series Krypto the Superdog, which aired on Cartoon Network and concluded in 2007.

Gunn’s Superman will delve into themes of dual identity, exploring how the Man of Steel reconciles his Kryptonian heritage with his upbringing among humans. The film captures Superman’s quest to uphold truth and justice while promoting compassion in a world that often neglects these values.

The cast features David Corenswet as Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer. Supporting roles include Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced, and Nathan Fillion.
