Jamie Foxx Reflects on Near-Death Experience During Recovery Journey
Jamie Foxx recently opened up about his harrowing near-death experience in his Netflix special What Had Happened Was. However, he shared an intriguing yet chilling conversation he had with his team just before his serious health scare in 2023. Foxx, who suffered a brain bleed resulting in a stroke while filming Back in Action alongside Cameron Diaz, faced a critical moment that left many concerned about his survival.
Number One on the Call Sheet, Foxx recounted a premonitory conversation with his associates regarding the possibility of something going wrong. “You know what’s crazy? Before it happened, I was talking to my people that handle my stuff [and they asked], ‘Jamie, wanna go over some papers just in case something happens?’ I said, ‘What’s gonna happen to me?’ Then boom! Gone,” he revealed, recalling the surreal moment before his health emergency in April 2023 that required a 20-day hospitalization and extensive rehabilitation.
Following his medical crisis, Foxx received an immense outpouring of support from friends, family, and fans. He expressed gratitude for the love and encouragement he received, stating that it significantly contributed to his healing process. “When it happened, the amount of love that was poured, the amount of people that reached out, really meant something. When I was talking to [God], he said, ‘Hey man, I’m gonna give you the second chance — what you gonna do with it?’
Jamie Foxx Envisioned His Death to Be Much Different
Fortunately, Foxx has made a remarkable recovery and returned to work, now serving as a producer on the new Apple TV+ documentary celebrating the impact of Black actors and actresses in Hollywood. In reflection, he noted that the way he envisioned his death was far more dramatic than the reality of a stroke. He humorously referenced the 1988 film Colors, which included an intense shootout scene featuring Don Cheadle, and remarked, “I thought I was gonna go out like Rocket (Don Cheadle) in a shootout in the mall or something. I didn’t think I was just gonna go out asking for an aspirin.”
Foxx’s experience serves as a poignant reminder of how life can surprise us in unexpected ways. While he did not meet his end in the dramatic fashion he once imagined, his story reflects the unpredictability of health and life. With a bright future ahead, Foxx continues to engage in various projects, including the much-anticipated sports comedy All-Star Weekend and the thriller Tin Soldier, where he stars alongside notable actors such as Robert De Niro and Scott Eastwood. Though Back in Action has faced criticism, fans can currently watch it streaming on Netflix as they eagerly await his upcoming film releases.
