Jaya Bachchan’s Name Debate Continues in Parliament
Jagdeep Dhankhar Engages in Light-hearted Exchange Amidst Ongoing Discussions
In a recent session of the Rajya Sabha, Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan found herself at the center of a lively discussion regarding the use of her name. Just a few days after she voiced her discontent over being addressed using her husband’s name, iconic actor Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya humorously introduced herself as ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’ in an apparent jest. This playful moment elicited laughter from Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar.
The light-hearted atmosphere changed when Dhankhar referred to her full name once again during the proceedings. This prompted Jaya to raise her objection once more, which led the Chairman to clarify the protocol concerning names in the House. In footage broadcast by ANI, Jaya described this situation as “naya drama,” highlighting her frustration with the ongoing focus on her husband’s identity.
In his response, the Vice President elaborated on the established procedures for name changes on official election certificates. Explaining the process, he noted, “The name that appears on the election certificate and the one submitted here can be changed through a process, and I myself took advantage of this process in 1989.”
However, Jaya firmly asserted her pride in her identity, stating, “No, sir. I’m very proud. I’m very proud of my name and my husband and his achievements. It signifies abha Jo mit nahi sakti. So, don’t worry. Ye drama aap logo ne naya shuru kiya hai – yeh pehle nahi tha.” (This is a new drama.)
Earlier, during a contentious moment in the Rajya Sabha, Jaya Bachchan had confronted Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh for referring to her as “Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan.” She emphasized her individual identity, insisting it should not be overshadowed by her husband’s name. Asking for recognition of her independent self, she remarked, “It would’ve been enough to call me Jaya Bachchan.” Following a reminder that this name is registered officially, Jaya took the opportunity to critique the practice, drawing attention to broader issues regarding identity and recognition in political spaces.
