Vice President JD Vance Faces Protests During Family Ski Trip in Vermont
Ski enthusiasts at Sugarbush Resort in Vermont experienced a wintry morning filled with sub-zero temperatures and light snow. However, the day took a politically charged turn as Vice President JD Vance arrived amidst a wave of protestors expressing their discontent.
As Vance’s motorcade passed, demonstrators shouted insults and political slogans, with one sign proclaiming, “Vance is a traitor. Go ski in Russia.” This backlash is believed to stem from Vance’s recent remarks during an Oval Office meeting with President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, where they appeared to support Russian interests over Ukraine.
The anti-Vance sentiment was echoed by one of the resort’s staff members, Lucy Welch, who is responsible for the snow report. In an email to subscribers, she criticized the Trump administration for cutbacks in Forest Service positions, drawing attention to the fact that Sugarbush is located on National Forest land impacted by climate change.
Welch’s message highlighted the increasing pressures faced by National Parks and Forests due to the current administration’s policies. She stated, “This Administration also neglects to address the danger, or even the existence of, climate change, the biggest threat to the future of our industry, and the skiing we all so much enjoy here.”
Footage of the protests circulated on social media, showcasing demonstrators holding flags in support of Ukraine, underscoring the broader geopolitical tensions influencing local sentiments. Reports from Fox News indicated that the extent of the protests prompted the Vance family to relocate to a “undisclosed location.”
Nearby at Mad River Glen, a sign humorously read, “Sorry VP. Sold out,” further emphasizing the unwelcoming atmosphere towards the vice president in a region that strongly backed Kamala Harris over Donald Trump in the recent presidential election.
This choice of vacation spot raised eyebrows, with social media users questioning Vance’s decision to ski in a state where he is clearly not favored. One user quipped, “JD Vance choosing Vermont to ski is still so baffling to me: ‘I’d like to go away with the fam for the weekend, I KNOW, I’ll go where LITERALLY everybody hates me.’”
As Vance and his family attempted to enjoy their time on the slopes, the protests left an undeniable mark on their visit, calling into question the feasibility of a relaxing getaway in such a contentious atmosphere.
