Head Injury Concerns Following FA Cup Match
In a tense FA Cup fifth-round match, Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta was carried off the field on a stretcher after experiencing a serious head injury due to a controversial tackle by Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts. The incident occurred early in the game, just eight minutes in, prompting a video assistant referee (VAR) review that led to Roberts’ dismissal.
The challenge took place when Roberts rushed out to intercept a long ball, but his attempt resulted in him striking Mateta’s head with his boot. The 27-year-old French forward received immediate medical attention on the pitch, including oxygen, before being transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.
Crystal Palace managed to secure a 3-1 victory despite the early setback, with substitute Eddie Nketiah stepping in for Mateta and later scoring in the match. By the end of the first half, Palace was leading 2-0, thanks to an own goal from Japhet Tanganga and a goal from Daniel Munoz.
At halftime, Palace chairman Steve Parish expressed his deep concern about the severity of Mateta’s injury during an interview on BBC One. “So far, what we know is he has a bad gash behind his ear. He’s obviously at the hospital,” Parrish stated. He continued by condemning the challenge, remarking, “In all the time I’ve watched football, I’ve not seen a challenge like it. That is the most reckless challenge on a football pitch I think I’ve ever seen, and I think he needs to have a long, hard look at himself because he’s endangering a fellow professional and maybe his life.” Parish underscored the gravity of the situation, stating that it was difficult for him to focus on the rest of the match after witnessing such a dangerous play.
Mateta has been a key player for Crystal Palace this season, contributing significantly with 15 goals over 33 appearances, and notably scoring eight times in his last eight Premier League outings. His current form highlights his importance to the team, making the implications of his injury particularly concerning as the club looks to continue its successful run in the tournament.
