Jeff Goldblum Discusses Role in Upcoming “Wicked” Adaptation
Jeff Goldblum appeared on The Today Show to share his insights on portraying The Wizard in the upcoming film adaptation of Broadway’s “Wicked.” Set to be a significant cinematic release, the film has garnered considerable anticipation among fans of both the musical and the original novel.
During his interview, Goldblum emphasized the remarkable attention to detail that has gone into the film’s production. “These sets were all built. They put a lot into this and cared so much for the material,” he commented, highlighting elaborate set designs including Munchkinland, Emerald City, and his own throne room, which were constructed to immerse the actors fully in their roles.
The actor also shared a personal touch from the filming experience, noting that he brought his two young children to the London sets. He praised director Jon M. Chu for his kindness towards his family during the shoots, indicating a supportive and welcoming filming environment.
Goldblum further teased the complexity of his character, stating, “That character is interesting. There are some dark aspects to that. Nothing is as it seems…There’s nobody [that is] all good or all bad.” This characterization led him to draw parallels between The Wizard and historical tyrants who have manipulated power dynamics by vilifying others, suggesting that the film presents a multi-faceted narrative that challenges black-and-white perceptions of morality.
Star-Studded Cast and Release Dates
The film adaptation features a talented ensemble cast, including Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero. Alongside Goldblum, other notable actors include Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Ethan Slater as Boq, and Marissa Bode as Nessarose.
The release schedule for “Wicked” is split into two parts, with the first installment set to debut on November 22, 2024, followed by the second part on November 21, 2025. This staggered release strategy reflects the filmmakers’ ambition to deliver a substantial narrative experience, catering to both theatrical enthusiasts and new audiences alike.
As the release dates approach, excitement continues to build, not only for the film’s stunning visuals and music but also for its exploration of complex themes and character development, promising a fresh take on a beloved story.
